Event: 22 August 2012

The penultimate round of the Yorkshire Summer Grand Prix series took on extra significance due to the previous round having to be cancelled after Sheffield’s Cookson Park track was left waterlogged by a late afternoon’s monsoon.

With Heckmondwike’s Firth Park track bathed in evening sunshine the riders were pleased to see the host club out with hosepipes to water the bends and reduce the dust levels. Hull’s Charlie Wade returned to action and continued his dominance in the Under 10’s by winning all four of his qualifying races and taking the grand final from grid 4 with an excellent tapes to flag win.

Wade is unbeaten in fifteen races in the series and this win will give him a confidence boost as he heads to the British Under 10 Championships this weekend. Keeping Wade on his toes were Heckmondwike’s Will Naylor and Sheffield’s Jack Brownell. Wade also leads the overall series now by just three points so all will be to play for next week at the final round on Wednesday 29 August.

Hull’s Rob Stockton-Garner took the Intermediate event with a fine four ride maximum in the qualifying races and another superb gate from grid four in the grand final.  This was Stockton-Garner’s second series win, and with his main rival Ellie Sullivan absent through a holiday, and he looks all set to take the title in the final round. There was some good racing for the minor placings with Sheffield duo Amber Webster and Linden German showing up well in their first entry in the competition.  The Open event saw Sheffield’s Radek Handke take five smart wins as he used the competition as a training night.

Heckmondwike’s Jake Wood had a good night with two well taken wins in the qualifiers, which included a last to first race in his fourth outing when he passed Rob Mawhood, David Cooper and then caught and passed Vicky Brown right on the last corner. Brown was using the competition as a warm up for her tilt at the British Women’s title and will be pleased with her efforts, which included taking the B Final from Mawhood and Louis German.

However it was Kyle Holland who was a man on a mission in the Open event. Knowing that he would miss the last round due to a holiday it was important that he finished as high as possible. He started with two comfortable wins but then met Handke twice but just managed to make the A Final. Starting from grid two he was confident of claiming at least runners up spot behind Handke.  Following a dreadful start he trailed behind Handke, Liam Webster and Wood and then fell on the third lap while attempting to pass Wood. But the 16 grand prix points achieved on the night has put him in an uncatchable position, the race is now on for second and third placing. Richard Hudson currently holds second spot, but is closely followed by David Cooper, Rob Mawhood and Darren Kent.
