A total of 16 starters arrived at a warm sunny Edinburgh, an excellent track and Scottish Hospitality, including four from the vibrant Newcastle team.

Mr Rothwell conducted the draw and referee Allen Hewittson blew the whistle for race. Mark Griffith made his intentions known with a fine gate over rival Dave Frith and Rothwell holding off Fred Mitchell. Norman Venson came through off grid 4 to take race 2, Gavin Parr raced away in heat 3, Dyson holding off Keith.

Joe McLaughlin took the fourth after a four lap battle with Kevin Smith with Chic Mackie always in contention, with two on the trot for McGee but it was Rothwell who led home Aris and Whiting .Parr took the sixth and Keith the seventh, Griffith holding off Venson in the eighth. Joe moved up the scorers list with a heat 10 win, whilst Dave Meanley took a gate to line victory in the 11th from Keith and Aris.

Race 12 and the unbeaten Griffith held off the challenge of Parr with Phil Hemming having no luck at all finishing his third race for three points. Lucky 13 as it all went right for Phil and away he went for four points from Dyson and Smith. Good win for Norman in race 14 as he held off a hard trying triumvirate of Newcastle riders, Keith always in contention.

Frith held off Parr with Mark continuing his unbeaten run in the 16th. With one to one and places in the Finals to attain, plenty to race for. Parr won form Venson with the consistent McLaughlin in third. Second victory; for Hemming from Whiting and Mitchell, some passing and re-passing in the 19th, with Frith winning from Meanley and Dyson. Race 20 and Mark wrapped up 20 points from gate 1, the impressive Keith second.

Finals time and after the usual preamble from Mr Rothwell, the 60’s began the finals, Leader Mick Aris had one, Rothwell two, Whiting three, Mackie four and that’s the way it ended as Mick has almost made sure of the jersey.

In the 50s B, Rothwell leading home Smith and Mitchell from gate 1. In 50s A, Joe capped a fine afternoon leading home from gate 1, holding off Aris and Dyson. In the 40s B Jason Keith had a fine debut and won from Dave Meanley and Mick Aris , now knackered. In the 40s A, Griffith, Parr Frith Venson produced a typical Venson pass leaving Parr out wide, Frith saw the opportunity and nipped in front for a close second.
