Location: Newport Cycle Speedway, Wales National Velodrome
Event: 23 June 2012

Despite the concerns regarding the weather that had saturated the UK, 16 riders signed on at Newport to contest round 4 of the GP series. Despite the heavy rain the track was in very good condition but would break up later.

Series leader Dennis Hubble gated over Aris with Frith always in contention throughout the four laps. Mike Burgess raced away from Dyson and Whiting for the second. Norman Venson powered round from four to take the third heat from Pete Chant. Neil Power showed the quickest way round as he won consecutive races 4/5. Top contenders met in the sixth but it was Hubble who raced home with Mike Burgess unable to pass Chant. Wins to Frith and Dyson but after eight races only Hubble and Power were unbeaten. Race 10 and Venson led from the inner to inflict Hubble’s first defeat.  Power followed this fate as he was unable to pass Frith and Chant and finished third.

After three races each and although Hubble and Frith have dropped a point, Burgess Chant and Power were all in contention. Race 13 saw Dyson return to winning ways leading home Venson and Gibbs. Hubble took his third win but only after having a four lap battle with Power. Good wins for Chant and Frith moved them back into GP point contention. One race each to go, and Hubble Frith had 15 each, Venson 14 with Burgess Power and Chant all on 13. In the other categories Hubble led Burgess,  Dyson and Aris, with the Super Vets being led by Mick Aris with Whiting and Rothwell close behind.

Greaves Chant Whiting and Aris started the seventeenth, a tight first turn followed by a crash on the back straight with the “innocent” Whiting testing out his crash helmet after being brought down. Chant taking the rerun from Aris and Greaves. Hubble took the eighteenth from Meanley, Burgess the ninettenth from Power with Frith totalling 19 with a good win in race 20. Plenty of good racing throughout, the track cutting up later, but it looks likely to provide a tremendous British Individual Final on August bank Holiday.

Hemming Dyson and Gibbs were always in the thick of the racing and despite there being a fitness gap amongst the Age groups everyone gave a 100%.

After much summation the various finals were duly arranged. Over 60s first up with Leader Mick Aris on 1 from John Whiting Fred Rothwell and Chic Mackie.  Aris led from the start with Rothwell and Mackie slotting in for second and third, lap three and a fine overtake from Rothwell to clinch the win and an important 25 points.

Over 50s B final and Phil hemming had an important Gate to line win from McLaughlin Greaves and Whiting. The A Final and series leader Dennis Hubble led all the way despite the close attentions of Mike Burgess with Aris picking off a tired Dyson.

Over 40s B, Neil Power completed a fine debut with a straight win from the inner, Venson held off Dyson and an even more tired Aris.

The A final produced a fine race, Hubble led from the inside but could never relax as positions were changing all the time, Pete Chant completed a fine afternoon with second, Frith holding off Mike Burgess for third.

The trophies were presented on behalf of the sponsors by Kevin Greaves with man of the match award deservedly going to Chic Mackie.
