Former World Pairs champion Dominik Rycharski has rejoined Coventry Devlins Newsagents Cycle Speedway team in a full transfer on the eve of the new season.
The popular Pole was immediately named by team boss Steve Bromwich as the Coventry number one in their comeback Midland League campaign. The city side has spent four years on the sidelines as a non-league outfit.
Rycharski, from Czestochowa, in southern Poland, originally joined Coventry in 2004 after being signed by club officials following his World Pairs victory in 2003. He soon established himself as a prolific scorer for the Hearsall Common based side.
The 33-year-old joined Birmingham three years ago to continue his top flight career in the absence of league racing in Coventry, becoming a leading points scorer for the Brummies.
He last week completed forms to transfer back to Coventry and will lead the Devlins Newsagents attack when Midland League racing returns to the city on Sunday 25 March when Stoke are the visitors.
Rycharski said: “Many people have worked so hard to get Coventry up and running again as a league club. So much work on the track and behind the scenes has taken place. I hope to play my part in riding as many matches as I can.
“I am also riding for my Polish club this year and I may miss a few matches due to work commitments but I am really looking forward to racing with my friend Konrad Pietak, also from my home city, for Coventry this year.
“With local riders like Dave Frith, Matt Lawrence, Myke Grimes and Norman Venson available, Coventry have the basis of a competitive all-round team this year,” he concluded.
Team manager Bromwich added: “Dominik gives us a powerful number one and a match for any rider in the league. He has been a terrific servant to the club and one of our most popular riders ever.”
