Sheffield v East Newport
Location: Bochum Parkway, Sheffield
Event: 18 September 2011
Report: Shane Hudson
Andy Angell celebrated his first appearance in Sheffield colours since becoming British Champion with a fine paid maximum as the home team cruised to 102-74 win over East Newport. Despite the best efforts of the young Welsh side the home team recorded six 7-3 before the interval and all the Stars riders were amongst the points.
East Newport's Aaron Herbert got off to great start taking the win in heat 1 however with Sheffield filling the minor places the race was shared, after that Birks and Hoyland then Angell and Handke stormed to the front and there was very little that could be done to stem the tide. The interval arrived with Sheffield 26 points up and the match was over as a contest.
After the break Sheffield gave their young reserves Aiden Owen and Jamie Langton extra rides to give them some much need experience of the Premier League and both riders were in the thick of the action, they both showed that there time is coming.
As the home side eased off the gas, East Newport recorded their first heat advantages of the match and certainly have riders who will mature into solid Premier League racers. Angell completed his maximum for Sheffield, Hoyland continued his rich vein of form with a solid 16+2 and but for a last race tapes offence Handke would have also been on maximum points. Jono Birks gave up one of his rides as he too would have been on for a maximum and Leigh Cossey had his best meeting in a Sheffield shirt with a workmanlike 14+2, Lee Grange also selflessly gave up a ride to help the young Stars have an extra race.
If the visitors can stick together and perhaps one or two shrewd signings over the winter period next year's fixture could well be a different matter, but as for today they came up against a Stars eight, hungry for points.

Combination League
With the onset of heavy rain the track conditions changed completely from that of the first team fixture however both teams got on with the job in hand and an excellent match took place.
Unfortunately the one senior rider involved in the racing seemed to take exception to the referee and number of the Sheffield Juniors, he promptly got himself match banned, which did nothing but show that maturity is not always gained with age.
Each heat was hard fought with plenty of great racing and passing, Jamie Langton for the home side recorded a five ride maximum and got great support from all his team mates, Ethan Greenslade, Colin Wildy and Ieuan Payne from East Newport battled hard and did much to make this such a an entertaining fixture.
Sheffield started well with two heat advantages, but then East Newport hit back and this was very much the way of things until the closing stages. A great 7-3 from Vicky Brown and Aiden Owen in heat 11 and then a storming ride from Richard Hudson & Lewis German in the following race sealed the Welshman's fate, Langton & Owen wrapped up the meeting with a final maximum.
Strangely the result was of secondary importance, the fact that the youngsters provided such good entertainment and got on with the racing, this was the real winner.
