Perry Park's BMX facility has been officially opened, one week before it hosts the European BMX Championships.

A track World Champion Shanaze Reade describes as good for the sport Perry Park forms the city's permanent BMX venue and a key part of the legacy for Birmingham's 2012 UCI BMX World Championships.

Also hosting a weekend of the British BMX Series and regional racing in 2011, Birmingham BMX club now have a year-round training facility to introduce new riders into a sport sure to capture the public's imagination come Olympic year.

And Olympian Shanaze Reade was full of praise for the new build as the ribbon was cut and the track unveiled.

"Things have changed a lot since I first saw the plans and the empty field that was going to become an international standard track; people often talk of how good a project will be and this is a rare occasion when the plans have been matched by the end result.

"Perry Park feels like the European tracks, it has that level of technicality and I think that Clark and Kent have done an amazing job. Most importantly, I can't wait to race here in front of a home crowd."
