Great Britain Cycling Team’s Corran Carrick-Anderson scored a top-20 finish in the junior men’s cross country race at the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Leogang today, finishing in 20th place, while fellow rider Rory McGuire crossed the finish line in 32nd position.

Both Corran and Rory started well, gaining places on the start loop but both their days were marred by dropped chains. Corran’s chain dropped for the first time at the end of the start loop, resulting in him losing touch with the front group.

Rory dropped his chain on the second lap meaning he had to coast the descent and run up a climb to reach the pits. Both riders showed resilience to their situations and continued to battle hard to finish comfortably in the top half of the results table.

The rainbow jersey went to Jan-Lennart Krayer from Germany, with Janis Baumann from Switzerland and Luca Martin from France filling the podium.

Earlier in the day, Anna Flynn finished in 24th place and Elena McGorum finished in 30th in the junior women’s race, after the weather conditions resulted in a last-minute change to the course, with the final descent being removed and an extra lap added all within an hour of the start.

As with the junior men, Anna moved up through the field in the start loop, but as the mud became claggier the race became more strung out with many riders taking the option to run through sections of the course.

Anna worked hard and moved well through the mud, ultimately time trialling her way to the finish line, while Elena was pulled at the end of the third lap, giving her the finishing position of 30th.

It was a convincing victory for the Austrian home favourite Mona Mitterwallner, while Germany’s Luisa Daubermann and Czech Republic’s Aneta Novotna finished in second and third place respectively.

Racing resumes tomorrow with the under-23 men’s cross-country race which will see Charlie Aldridge, Harry Birchall, Sean Flynn and the recently crowned E-MTB world champion Tom Pidcock representing Great Britain, along with qualification rides for the downhill mountain bikers.
