British Cycling has today announced that endurance coach Brian Stephens is leaving his role within the Great Britain Cycling Team to take up a position at Team Sunweb.

Stephens joined the organisation in 2015, making the switch from Cycling Australia. During his time with British Cycling, Stephens has been instrumental in the development of the Great Britain Cycling Team’s rider pathway.

His role as senior academy endurance coach has seen him work with under-23 riders, both in Manchester and the recently-established training base in Montichiari, Italy, ensuring that the Great Britain Cycling Team’s developing riders are well-equipped to make the transition to senior competition.

British Cycling will now work together with Team Sunweb to ensure that the transition over the coming weeks is as smooth as possible for both organisations.

Stephens said:

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at British Cycling. I’ve made great friends among the coaching and support staff, and have had the pleasure of working with some fantastically talented young riders who all have big careers ahead of them, looking at Tokyo 2020 and beyond.

“Whilst looking forward to taking up my role at Team Sunweb, I wish British Cycling the very best and am confident that the staff here will go on to achieve similar success to that which we have enjoyed during previous Olympic cycles.”

Great Britain Cycling Team performance director, Stephen Park, added:

“Brian’s contribution to British Cycling during his time here has been invaluable. This organisation is renowned for ensuring that talent is spotted early and that riders reach their full potential, and Brian has played a crucial role in this process over recent years.
