Silvers for Archibald and Mould at Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Manchester

World and European champion Katie Archibald claimed silver as the Manchester crowd was treated to a thrilling women’s omnium on the opening night of the Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup at the HSBC UK National Cycling Centre.

Great Britain Cycling Team’s Archibald and the USA’s Jennifer Valente went into the final sprint of the final event separated by just a single point, but it was the American who found the energy to secure gold after the gruelling 80-lap race.

Archibald had earlier won the elimination race and took fourth and second in the scratch and tempo races respectively, before winning three sprints during the points race to set up the sensational finale.

Archibald’s achievements were matched by Wales’ Jonathan Mould, who took a fantastic silver medal in the men’s scratch race.

Mould found himself in a breakaway and subsequent tussle for gold with Kazakhstan’s Nikita Panassenko, eventually crossing the line second. Matthew Walls, riding for 100% me, finished seventh, while Great Britain’s Chris Latham was ninth.

Men’s team sprint

Great Britain were narrowly edged out of the medal positions in the men’s team sprint, as Ryan Owens, Jack Carlin and Joe Truman were beaten by the Netherlands in the bronze medal ride-off.

The British trio had earlier defeated Poland and New Zealand – with Olympic champion Phil Hindes riding in place of Owens against the Kiwis – in the previous stages of the competition. Germany took gold in the event after defeating Beat Cycling Club in the final.

Men’s team pursuit

Great Britain’s men’s team pursuit squad will ride for the gold medal tomorrow after an impressive showing saw them overhaul European champions France in the final stages of a titanic battle this evening.

After recording the fastest time in qualifying, the British quartet of Steven Burke, Ed Clancy, Ollie Wood and Kian Emadi overtook the French in the last three laps of their first round clash, to record a time of 3:56:137. They will ride against Denmark in tomorrow’s final.

There is the possibility of further British medal success in the event, after national champions Team KGF – the quartet of Jonathan Wale, Jacob Tipper, Dan Bigham and Charlie Tanfield – earned a place in the bronze medal final by stopping the clock at 3:58:134 to beat Belgium. They now take on France tomorrow for a place on the podium.

Ethan Hayter, Matt Bostock, Joe Holt and Matthew Walls, representing 100% me, recorded a time of 4:02:527 in qualifying, which was good enough for 10th place.

Women’s team sprint

Team sprint duo Katy Marchant and Sophie Capewell twice bettered their fastest time as a pairing, but their medal hopes were dashed by eventual winners Germany at the first round stage. The British team’s 33.530 saw them finish in seventh.

Women’s scratch

A strong showing from Emily Kay earned her seventh place in the women’s scratch race, while Ellie Dickinson – riding for Team Breeze – recovered from a fall to finish 11th as world champion Rachele Barbieri of Italy took gold.
