Great Britain Cycling Team para-cycling head coach Jon Norfolk has been recognised for a year which saw the team top the medal table at the Rio Paralympics with an MBE for services to cycling.

A former sprinter and tandem pilot, Norfolk made the switch from rider to coach just before the Beijing Paralympics in 2008.

After five years working with the Olympic team, he was appointed head coach of the para-cycling squad in early 2013. He oversaw a four-year cycle which saw the team win multiple world titles on the track and road before culminating with a successful Paralympics in Rio with the team bringing home 21 medals and topping the cycling medal table.

The team also made a successful start on the journey to Tokyo 2020 winning eight golds, four silver and two bronze medals at the 2017 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Los Angeles in March.

Norfolk said: “It was a real honour to be awarded an MBE. While it was nice to be recognised personally the success of the team wouldn’t have been possible without all the hard work of the dedicated coaching and support staff around me and of course the dedication of the riders in the programme.

“The success in Rio was the culmination of four years of hard work and preparation and while we enjoyed that success attention has now turned to making sure we are in the best possible position to repeat that success in Tokyo.”

As well as the honour for Norfolk, many members of the Great Britain Cycling Team were recognised for their success at the Olympic and Paralympic Games with riders like Laura Kenny, Jason Kenny and Jody Cundy all picking up awards in recent months.
