Isaac Peatfield and Ava Oxley-Szilagy took Stage 2 victories to head into Sunday’s final day of the Sleepwell Hotels Isle of Man Youth Tour full of confidence.
Peatfield and Oxley-Szilagy won the A races while there was also success for Innes Harvey in the Boys B race.
The British Cycling Youth Circuit Series race saw riders take on a gruelling loop around Jurby, with the majority of the day’s racing finishing in sprint finishes, except the A Boys race.
Youth A Boys
Peatfield, of Green Jersey RT, made the jump in the closing few kilometres, leaving a big field behind him wondering whether to chase or not.
The slow reaction allowed Peatfield to take the stage victory and head up the General Classification going into Sunday’s final stage.
Pedalsport CC’s James Bunting led the chasing bunch across the line to claim second and the green points jersey, while Lee Valley Youth’s Louis Billiard took third.
Youth A Girls
Oxley-Szilagy outsprinted her rivals to take the Stage 2 win in the Youth A Girls race, but her victory was marred by a ten second time penalty for unsafe riding at the finish.
The PH-MAS/Paul Milnes/Oldfields rider was not relegated from her win, but she was given the time penalty having taken her hands from the handlebars in the final metres.
Anna Armstrong, of Speedflex RT, crossed the line in second while Towy Riders’ Eluned King finished in third, with Ella Barnwell, of Backstedt/Hotchillee leading the overall standings by three seconds after coming fifth in the sprint.
Youth B Boys
Harvey relied on his superior speed at the finish to win a bunch sprint ahead of Hetton Hawks CC’s Josh Charlton and Bike Box Alan’s Max Poole.
Charlton keeps the leaders’ yellow jersey but after what was a charge from start to finish, he could not quite match Harvey’s kick in the closing metres.
With an attack from West Wales CRT’s Josh Tarling and the ensuing chase bringing the boys field in touch with the Girls A&B races, Harvey kept his cool in a crowded sprint to cross the line in first place and one piece.
