UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) has confirmed that 53-year-old cyclist Michael Ellerton has been banned from all sport for two years following an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV).

Ellerton, who was previously registered with Team Swift, tested positive for glucocorticoids prednisone and prednisolone following an in-competition test at the Port Talbot Wheelers Cycling Club’s annual 25-mile time trial on 11 September 2016, an event governed by Cycling Time Trials (CTT).

Ellerton contested that the finding came as a result of taking medication for mouth ulcers in the lead up to the race.

British Cycling’s chair Jonathan Browning said: “This case highlights how important it is that every cyclist, no matter what level they are competing at, is aware of their responsibility to check which medications are prohibited. This can easily be checked by visiting Global DRO

“British Cycling has developed an anti-doping culture over many years, supported by an educational programme, in competition testing programme and athlete support at all levels.”

Ellerton is banned from all sport from 11 September 2016 until 10 September 2018. More information is available via UKAD’s website.
