Marchant celebrates keirin gold as Great Britain Cycling Team end Track Euros in style

Katy Marchant sprinted to an exceptional keirin gold medal as the Great Britain Cycling Team ended the UEC Under-23 and Junior European Track Championships with a fantastic 12 medals in Athens.

Marchant’s win delivered one of the three medals on the final day in Greece as Grace Garner won silver in the junior women’s omnium and Jonathan Mitchell took bronze in the under-23 men’s keirin.

Great Britain Cycling Team end the six-day event with four gold, five silver and three bronze medals.

For 22-year-old Marchant, a former heptathlete, it is a second medal of the championships after winning silver in the team sprint with Victoria Williamson.

Grace Garner won silver in the junior women’s omnium

Teammate Danni Khan joined Marchant in the final and took fourth place.

Grace Garner started day two of her omnium with victory in the fourth event, the 500m time trial, in 36.538 seconds before taking fourth in the flying lap.

Seven points in the points race secured second place with a total of 181, 11 behind Polish winner Daria Pikulik.

In the under-23 men’s Madison, Oliver Wood and Chris Latham were fourth while Matt Gibson and Germain Burton finished 12th.

Jonathan Mitchell took bronze in the under-23 men’s keirin

Joe Truman, winner of bronze in the team sprint, was fourth in the junior men’s keirin.

Joe Holt and Matt Bostock saw their hopes of a medal in the junior men’s Madison end when the latter was wiped out.

Emily Kay was ninth in the under-23 women’s omnium with 157 points, Denmark’s Amalie Dideriksen winning gold with 227 points.
