The Great Britain Cycling Team rode to under-23 men’s team pursuit gold as one of three medals on a terrific second day at the UEC Under-23 and Junior European Track Championships in Greece.

Oliver Wood, Germain Burton, Matt Gibson and Chris Latham defeated Switzerland in the gold-medal final in a time of 3:58.996 after the quartet had qualified fastest in the Athens Velodrome.

Earlier in the evening Katy Marchant and Victoria Williamson took silver in the under-23 women’s team sprint with a time of 33.457 seconds to Russia’s 33.016 in the final.

Katie Archibald added silver in the under-23 women’s individual pursuit in a close encounter with Denmark’s Amalie Dideriksen, the Scot’s time of 3:31.984 just over a second slower than Dideriksen’s effort.

The Great Britain Cycling Team have now won four medals in the opening two days of the six-day event.

The victory for Burton, Gibson and Latham comes after the trio - with Mark Stewart - won bronze in the team pursuit at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Colombia in January.

Grace Garner, Rebecca Raybould, Eleanor Dickinson and Megan Barker narrowly missed out on the medal finals in the junior women’s team pursuit, their time of 4:47.46 placing them in fifth in qualifying with the top four progressing to race for the podium places.

British junior sprint champion Sophie Capewell showed her future potential with a strong ride in the sprint which took her all the way to the bronze-medal final, where she pushed Julita Jagodzinska to three heats in a 2-1 defeat.

Reece Wood was eighth in the junior men’s individual pursuit with a time of 3:21.875 while Matthew Bostock was 13th in 3:25.367.

In the under-23 men’s team sprint, there was misfortune for Jonathan Mitchell, John Paul and Tom Scammell as the trio were relegated for an illegal changeover from man two to three.

Alex Joliffe nearly added to his bronze in the team sprint with a strong ride in the kilo, 1:04.413 just 0.027 seconds off a medal position. Frank Longstaff was 16th in 1:06.807.

Emily Nelson was also in action in the under-23 women’s individual pursuit taking 13th with a time of 3:43.572.

Thursday sees medals decided in the under-23 women’s points race, under-23 men’s points race, junior women’s points race, junior women’s 500m time trial and junior men’s points race.
