Boardman: HS2 must set standard for cycle-proofing

The delivery of High Speed 2 and High Speed 3 is a big test of the government’s commitment to build cycling into major infrastructure projects – and an opportunity to set the tone – British Cycling has said.

Patrick McCloughlin, the transport secretary, told an audience in Leeds that the general election result was ‘a massive vote of confidence in HS2’. ‘The argument has been won,’ he told council leaders, ‘HS2 will be built…with construction starting in two years’.

David Cameron confirmed the government’s commitment to cycle-proofing all big infrastructure projects as part of a package of measures outlined in a letter to Chris Boardman, British Cycling’s policy adviser, just days ahead of the election.

Reacting to Mr McCloughlin’s remarks, Boardman said: “It is a vital that the Prime Minister’s promise of cycle-proofing big infrastructure projects is kept. HS2 and HS3 are a chance for the transport minister to set the standard by publishing clear guidelines for how the project will integrate people travelling by bike.

“Making cycling part of a longer train journey is an easy way to reduce congestion on the road and British Cycling would be happy to work with national and local government to make this work.”
