British Cycling has welcomed today's announcement that para-cycling will be included in the programme for the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) announced 22 sports that will feature in the Tokyo games, with cycling once again making it through the selection process.

“At British Cycling we take great pride in the achievements of our para-cyclists so this is great news,” said a spokesperson for British Cycling.

“There was no doubt the UCI and the IPC would work together to find a solution. Para-cycling was one of the successes of London 2012 and it's certain to be a big draw in Rio and Tokyo too."

Great Britain Cycling Team Paralympic Podium Programme rider Jody Cundy said:

"I think it's great news that cycling is back in for Tokyo.

"It helps securing funding all the way through to Tokyo and beyond so it gives our juniors that are up and coming something to aim for.

"It's a win-win all round."

The 22 sports accepted for Tokyo are: athletics, archery, badminton, boccia, canoe, cycling, equestrian, football 5-a-side, goalball, judo, powerlifting, rowing, shooting, sitting volleyball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis.

Each sport had to apply for a place and was judged by the IPC against a rigorous set of criteria including participation levels, competition programme, athlete classification and anti-doping programmes.

The London 2012 Paralympics saw record levels of participation, with 4237 athletes from 164 countries taking part. Great Britain was the most successful para-cycling nation, with 22 medals including eight gold.
