The final day of the UEC Junior and Under-23 European Track Championships in Anadia, Portugal, saw three more medals for Great Britain, with Grace Garner taking silver in the junior women’s omnium.

Garner lay in silver medal position after the first three events, four points adrift of Lithuania’s Edita Mazureviciute.

Strong performances in the time-trial and flying lap put Garner into the lead going into the last event but the 17-year-old lost ground on her rivals in the final points race to finish in silver medal position.

After the event Garner tweeted:

“Disappointed to lose the lead but very happy to take 2nd place! :) Learnt a lot! Thank you for all the support.”

Katy Marchant took bronze in the under-23 women’s keirin, behind the Netherlands’ Elis Ligtlee and Melissandre Pain of France. Marchant’s teammate Rosie Blount was runner-up in the minor final, placing her eighth overall in the contest.

There was another medal in the junior men’s Madison, with Britain’s Joe Evans and Joe Holt taking a solo lap to bag bronze behind Russia’s Nikolay Ilichev and Vitalii Ivshin and Switzerland’s Patrick Muller and Nico Selenati. Britain’s Gabriel Cullaigh and Matt Gibson were eighth.

Emily Kay was seventh in the under-23 women’s omnium after three events but lost ground in the time-trial, flying lap and points race to finish a creditable tenth, after needing hospital treatment following a points race crash earlier in the championships.

Brit Joseph Truman was sixth in the junior men’s keirin, while Chris Latham and Oliver Wood placed 11th in the under-23 men’s Madison.

The final day’s medal haul meant that Great Britain placed fifth in the medal table with ten medals in total; two gold, four silver and four bronze.
