British Cycling is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dave Watkins, a renowned track sprinter and former Executive Committee member of the British Cycling Federation.

Born in Birmingham in May 1945, Watkins represented England in the scratch race and match sprint at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica, and returned podium finishes in national championship sprint and tandem events across three decades, before retiring as a professional in 1982.

Upon retirement he switched his focus to the administration of the sport, playing a key role in shaping the direction of the Federation through its Executive Committee and leading the organising committee for the National Track Championships – laying the foundations for a new generation of talented young riders.

He will be sorely missed, and the thoughts of everybody at British Cycling are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.
