British Cycling is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mike Hodgson.

As organiser of one of British road racing’s most iconic and challenging events – the Tour of the Reservoir – Mike contributed an enormous amount to cycling in Britain over many decades, and his loss will be felt by all within the racing community.

Speaking on behalf of the organisation, British Cycling President, Bob Howden OBE, said:

“I have lost a close friend, and the world of cycling has lost a tremendous servant. Mike had an indomitable spirit and whilst the Tour of the Reservoir was one of the toughest races on the calendar, he was always looking to do more with the formula, in search of being bigger and better.

“As a fellow organiser I had tremendous admiration for Mike’s commitment, which was in spite of his underlying health issues, and I would often reflect as to whether I could ever achieve that level of fortitude should I be in the same position – invariably the answer would be a resounding ‘no’.

“I won’t be alone in regretting that this terrible virus prevents me from saying my goodbyes at the funeral of a true friend. I do however hope that his memory will live on, through ‘Mike Hodgson stories’ of which I’m sure there’ll be many.”

Dame Sarah Storey, a regular participant in the Tour of the Reservoir, said:

“Mike was one of our sport’s true heroes; a volunteer who ran some of our biggest races and gave his time to help as many as he could.

“Tour of the Reservoir is an incredible race and is made possible thanks to Mike’s hard work and dedication over many years. He will be sorely missed, and I’m devastated that – abiding by current restrictions – we can’t attend his funeral.”

Erick Rowsell, another former Tour of the Reservoir stage winner and British Cycling’s Elite Road Racing Manager, added:

“Mike added so much to the sport. His race was always a favourite among riders, and there will be so many people with fond memories of him and his events.

“Over the last few months, I have been lucky enough to have many conversations with him – it was always a pleasure to speak with Mike and witness the passion he had for our sport; it always put a smile on my face.

“Mike was part of the fabric of cycling in Britain, and he will be hugely missed.”

The thoughts of everyone at British Cycling are with Mike’s wife Flora, daughter Andrea, his wider family and friends at this time.
