Calling all potential Road, Track and Mountain Bike Commisaires!
Welsh Cycling is looking to develop its number of qualified commissaires in all cycle disciplines. Working in conjunction with British Cycling, Welsh Cycling will be putting on commisaire training courses at the end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009.
The first course to be run is for Mountain Bike officials that will be run towards the end of September / early October. The course will cover MTB Cross Country, MTB Downhill, 4 Cross and, if required, Cyclo Cross.
With the popularity of the sport increasing, the demand for events is rising. Events cannot be held without a commissaire being present. The commissaire ensures the safety of the event and more importantly the safety (and fair play!) of the riders. Acting as a representative of British and Welsh Cycling a commissaire must be quick thinking, thorough and most importantly, must possess a sense of humour!
If you attend events as a spectator or a parent then you have the potential to be a commissaire. Most courses are run over a day’s duration and cover all aspects of officiating an event, with a straightforward exam at the end of the training day to assess your progress.
Once you have been accredited, you will be able commissaire at an allocated event with your approval, as an assistant commissaire. You will shadow the chief commissaire with the aim of learning from their experience and improving your knowledge. Once you have a number of events under your belt and are comfortable at officiating you will be given the opportunity to progress and act as a chief commisaire, where you will be able to take charge of an event.
If you are interested in taking one of the courses please contact Welsh Cycling on michael.heaven@welshcycling.co.uk.
All training is FREE to members of British Cycling, and officials receive ongoing support through mentoring. This is an excellent opportunity to join the enjoyable community of trained cycling volunteers!
After training, all that is required is an attendance of six events (minimum) throughout the year.
