Tywyn Welsh Criterium Championships

The Dysynni CC’s Welsh Youth Circuit Race Championships at Tywyn on Saturday took place in fine weather, with a testing breeze off the sea making for some tough and exciting racing.

Dylan Kerfoot-Robson, the current Welsh U12 cyclo-cross champion, added the road discipline to his championship list with a clear victory in the 12 kilometre U12 race, breaking clear early of the rest of the pack early on and maintaining a 25 second lead.

Jessica Roberts (Towy Riders) won the U10 girls, and Sol Kerfoot-Robson dominated the U8 boys.

Peter Stewart crossed the line in the U10 boys just ahead of Huw Jones (Alf Jones Cycles) and David Tudor (Rhyl CC) to take the Welsh title.

Robbie Westwood (Maindy Flyers) fought off the North Wales challenge of Ryan Mullen (Rhos-On-Sea CC) and Ben Matthews (Deeside Olympic/Veeboard/GWR) to win the U14 boys.

The senior main race resulted in a victory for Andrew Williams (Cwmcarn Paragon) ahead of Richard Harris, but the determined rider award went to Jonny Cawley (Rhos-On-Sea CC), who was dropped from the break mid-way through the race, crashed on a corner and lost some skin before remounting to still take 6th place in the end, one place ahead of Mike Cripps (Army CU).

Dysynni CC’s Cara Chesworth gave the home crowd something to shout about, winning the women’s title after a text book lone attack near the end to leave her two South Wales breakaway partners trailing.

Elinor Barker from Cardiff.

"It was a tough race and I was really happy and proud to win the Gold medal. It was great to have my team mates Amy and Sarah on the podium with me."

Amy Roberts, 13, from Llanelli who got Silver.

"I am really pleased to get Silver - it was a fast pace race and I tried to keep up with Elinor but she was just too good on the day! It was great that the Lifeforce Team did so well."

Her younger sister Jessica Roberts, 9 who rides for Towy riders won Gold.

"It was great to win Gold but it was even nicer to beat lots of the boys! I really enjoyed the race."

Sarah Crowley who won a bronze in the Youth B Gilrs event.

"I have never ridden this course before as it is my first year in road racing. The conditions were warm and windy and I was racing amongst 14 and 16 year olds, boys and girls. I lost the front group

early on due to my inexperience, but managed to plough my way through the other riders getting faster, achieving a Bronze Medal of which I was very pleased. Hopefully this experience will help me in future races."

Dylan Kerfoot, winner of the under 12 boys event and the Nicole Cooke signed t-shirt competition.

"It was great to win the t-shirt signed by Nicole as the way she rides is such an inspiration. I hope to follow her from the Welsh national to the Olympic podium"
