The Arriva Trains Youth Tour of Wales
Competitors from 5 to 15 yrs voted the first running of the Arriva Trains Wales Youth Tour a hit. Based on Wales' only purpose built cycle racing circuit at Parc Bryn Bach, Tredegar, two massed start and one time trial race were tackled over the course of two days. Councillor Jennifer Williams, Mayor of Blaenau Gwent, presented the awards and expressed her personal delight over the enthusiasm and skill displayed by the young cyclists, at the same time pledging support from her office to any future event.
Geraint Morgan, community affairs manager for Arriva Trains Wales, said:
"We were delighted to support the Youth Tour of Wales for 2008. Both weekends attracted cyclists from across Wales and England with some very competitive racing. It’s been great to see so many young people taking part with the ambition of emulating their Olympic cycling heroes."
The organisers of the event were pleased with the amount of children who turned up to ride the event and are hoping that next year will see even more children participate. Dates of September 5 and 6 have been earmarked for next year, four seperate stages over the two days.
Follow-up activities will include four seperate 'come and try it'
mornings at Parc Bryn Bach, aimed at young riders who can experience traffic-free road conditions. Details of these will be posted on the website
