Welsh Championship XC Results 2007
Barry Sidings, Rhondda Heritage Park Sunday August 19th
Sunday 19th August saw a dedicated bunch of riders tackle the challenging course at Barry Sidings that made up the Welsh Championships. Despite the constant rain the day before (just to make sure that Wales lives up to it's muddy reputation!!) the weather stayed dry on the day. This probably didn't matter too much for the riders, who were getting pretty wet around the course anyway, but it did make it more pleasant for the supporters, marshals and race officials.
The course was a good mix of technical sections, uphill fireroad climb and slippery, rooty sections. It was an appropriate challenge to find our Welsh Champions. Prizes were an innovative mix of gifts which included pot pourri, cork screws, wine and fruit. Leahrhys.com racing have sponsored a trophy in memory of Schmoo to hand to the Welsh Champion male and female each year for the next fifteen years. The winners this year were Ruth Owen-Evans and Lee Williams.
Huge thanks should go to Joanne Bendon and her family for organising the event. All in all it was a great day. Don't just take my word for it though, here are some of the comments posted on xcracer.com:
"I thought it was a great race, and I loved all the fruit being given out afterwards!"
"Good course, nice to see someone with balls putting on a technical course. I even got off and ran/walked/slipped down some bit on the last lap because I was buggered and know my limits."
"The course was by far the best I have ridden this year, and I'm rubbish at technical! The climbs were also "fun" and the weather held up nicely. And the prizes, well they were legendary!"
"Think I would have enjoyed it more had the descents been a little drier and perhaps I should have taken advice and gone for at least one mud tyre! Thought race duration was a little long but then maybe I was just too slow on the course. BUT well done to the organisers we need more of you and thank you to everyone who helped out."
We hope to see all of you at the last round of the series on September 9th at Llaneglwys Forest, Brecon. There's more information on Welsh Cycling's web site (www.welshcycling.co.uk) and on the Brecon Wheelers site (breconwheelers.wordpress.com).
