Its not very often youth riders get a chance to train with Paralympic and World Champions, but that was the opportunity for two Newport Velo riders last week.

With a full GB squad in town (Newport) for two days of extensive training under the watchful eye of GB National Disability Coach Chris Furber, the youngsters where not going to miss their chance to show they are the talent of the future and near future at that !

Something all ready noted with both now Academy Athletes with Federation for Disability Sport in Wales.

With only 8 weeks of tandem riding under her belt Emma Suliavan (15) had a great two days piloted for the first time by Rebecca Rimmington.

The pair who usually ride with different partners at Newport, showed true professionalism as they very quickly jelled!

With a mixture of 1000m and 2000m timed efforts over the two days the seconds tumbled by the hour as they started to work together as a single unit. With a plane to catch for the Tour of Islamabad Rebecca was going to be hanging around!

As they progressed and developed over the camp, their final kilo was a very respectable 1.16.25!

It was now time for the solo riders with James Brookman (13), who trains every week with the club, spending a lot of time discussing with Rik Waddon (CP3) and Darren Kenny (CP4) the finer points of track cycling and in particular the Kilo and was given valuable information on how they have adapted techniques for their transitions on pursuit bars.

Once all the talking was over it was time to put some of the World Champions tips into action, which James showed he was a fast learner, taking just under a second off his personal best for the flying 200m.

A great camp was had by all and special thanks to Chris Furber and all the Squad for taking the time with our Welsh Talent.

On a closing note, if you are going to spend hours on a tandem together it helps if you get along!
