The World’s top riders head for Newport this Sunday !
This weekend (Sunday 24th May) sees some of the World’s top Paralympic riders head to the Wales National Velodrome in Newport for the UCI Wales Disability Grand Prix of Wales.
Now in its fourth year the Grand Prix has a reputation for attracting the top riders, but also as the place to debut for new talent and this year is no exception.
Flights from North and South America will be busy in the coming days as riders make the trip across the Atlantic from Brazil , USA and Canada . Our European neighbors’ have also joined up once again; with for the first time two tandem pairs from the Netherlands making the trip.
Returning for the fourth year, but this time as multi Paralympic gold medalists are two riders who started their competitive cycling careers at the Grand Prix in 2006, Jody Cundy and Simon Richardson.
Cycling debuts are one more the order of the day at the event and post Beijing see’s some very interesting moves by Paralympians from other sports.
First up, climbing out of the pool onto the back of the tandem is Jenny McCoughlin with double Beijing gold medalist Ellen Hunter as her very able pilot.
The sport of athletics has the biggest transition of Beijing athletes to cycling with Tracey Hinton teaming up with Bex Rimmington, Neil Fauche joining Olympic, Commonwealth Games medalist and former World Champion Craig Mclean on another tandem and Stephen Payton hanging up his spikes and switch to the boards in the CP3 category.
With World ranking points up for grabs the competition will once again be entertaining with first event scheduled for 10am; spectator entry is free, so come along as watch the action.

Now in its fourth year the event has been elevated to full "UCI World Ranking" status for the first time in 2009 and marks a major milestone in the development of Paralympic Cycling in Wales to have such a prestigious event on home soil.
Although the event attracts many of the Worlds Elite Paralympic cyclists, it is also about providing a place for disabled riders of any level to compete and this year will be no exception with to date over a dozen new names including youth riders planning to use the Grand Prix like Jody Cundy did in 2006 to launch their careers.

New Dates for Disability Grand Prix of Wales
Due to a number of requests from competitors, Neil Smith the organiser of the Disability Grand Prix of Wales has decided to moved the date of this years event to ensure another strong International field takes to the boards in Newport.
A new date of Sunday 24th May is now set and with riders once again planning to travel from Australasia, USA and Europe, it looks like a full field of past and future Paralympians will be once again be in attendance.
Now in its fourth year, the Grand Prix is unique in that it provides an opportunity for all disabled riders to take part in a competition alongside Paralympic hero's and with riders from 12 years of age taking part it is quite a spectacle.
The event is also spawning ground for new talent and was where two of our Team GB's newest Paralympic Gold medalists Jody Cundy and Simon Richardson made their cycling debuts.
We look forward to welcoming all riders to Wales in 2009 and for further information go to the event web site www.walesgp.com or contact Neil Smith on neilsmith@btinternet.com
