East Newport Cycle Speedway

win puts them in striking distance of title

Last Sunday East Newport Cycle Speedway Team raced their

final league match of the season recording an 89 - 86 victory

against Hellingly Lions.

On a sunny afternoon, watched by a large crowd the Eastenders

secured the victory needed to guarantee at least second place in

this years South West Division One League.

The margin of the victory looked close, but in fairness to the home

side victory was secured before the final race & this being achieved

despite suffering three exclusions & a fall for one of their top

riders.

Ryan Hughes returned to form with a good display & with both Nicky

Evans & Nigel Clark riding well victory was always going to be the home side.

Hellingly have to be congratulated for their part played in this entertaining

fixture fighting for every point even when victory was beyond them.

The team now face two remaining away fixtures at Southampton & Poole

with victory in each match being required to win this years league title.

East Newport scores

Nigel Clark 13 (5),  Aaron Hughes 11 (5), Matt Davis 7 (3),  Neil Power 10+2 (5)

The Eastenders Division two combination side beat Hellingly 41 - 38 to

secure vital league points in their quest to finish in this seasons top two

placings.

Manager Aaron Hughes said

The side were once again superbly led by their young Captain Josh Davis

& was well supported in this victory by Dan Bock & Dan Davies who only

took up the sport three weeks ago.

East Newport Cycle Speedway

held to a draw

East Newport Cycle Speedway Team secured a vital

league point racing at Hellingly last Sunday.14Th September.

The Eastenders faced an uphill battle to secure any points

from the fixture following the late with drawl of one of their

leading riders & having to race on a badly prepared circuit.

The early races were evenly spilt with the side matching

the home team in every department, but an exclusion for

the Eastenders in the seventh race gave the home side a

narrow interval lead.

Following the break the Eastenders failed to reduce their

arrears finding themselves seven points down with only two

races remaining.

Race victories in the last two heats saw the team secure a

vital draw.

Even though a draw is an excellent result a fall for Neil Power

whilst leading the fifteenth race & some poor decisions by the

match referee proved costly to the team.

The side now need to win their three remaining league matches

to win this years South West Division one title.

On the same day the Eastenders Division Two Combination side

secured an excellent 44 - 36 victory.

The three points gained from this win temporarily puts the side top of

the Division two table,  with a top three finish now looking likely.

East Newport Cycle Speedway take local

rivals to the wire

An exciting match was watched by a large crowd when East Newport

took on local rivals Newport in an u18 South West Conference league

match at the International Sports Village track on Saturday 30th August.

The East Newport Club who were using 4 first year riders put on a

great show against their more experienced opponents

only just losing by 77 - 72.

The final sealing point in this exciting derby was heat 14 when

Kieran Mahoney who last raced for the home side last year tucked in

to secure a 7 - 3 & win the match for the title chasing Newport side.

For the East Enders 8 year old Ethan Lewis had his best match by far,

& was well supported by man of the match Colin Wildy plus the ever

improving Josh Davis.

East Newport Cycle Speedway Team

narrowly miss out to Horspath

Last Sunday 31st August East Newport Cycle Speedway Team

lost their second South West Division one league match of the

season away to Oxford based team Horspath.

Missing several leading riders the understrength Eastenders

struggled on the narrow Village circuit.

As expected every rider gave it one hundred percent effort with

the 98 - 81 scoreline not reflecting the level of commitment shown

by the team.

Mike Rice, Kieran Jones & Nicky Evans all featured in some close

races with Nicky in particular not scoring the points his efforts deserved.

The defeat leaves the side equal on points at the top of the table with

only race points difference separating them from their closest rivals

Poole.

East Newport Cycle Speedway Team

defend their place at the top

Last Sunday East Newport Cycle Speedway Team defeated

Exeter 94 - 85 at home in a hard fought league match to remain

at the top of the South West Division One Table.

The understrength Eastenders struggled to break down their tough

& determined opponents in the early races with the heavy track conditions

being a difficult obstacle for the riders to overcome.

A heat 4 maximum & the same in heats 8 & 9 enabled the side to

establish a 10 point lead by the halfway stage..

An early second half fight back by Exeter was easily stopped by some

tactical replacements introduced by the East Enders enabling the side

to maintain a comfortable lead at all times, securing victory by the end of

heat 17.

Exeter are to be recognised for their part played in an exciting match, but

in fairness to the East Newport side they were never under real threat with

their strength in depth once again proving decisive.

Each East Newport rider scored vital points, but the performances of Nicky

Evans 11+1 making his debut this season, and utility rider Gilbert Davis 13+1

called up as a late replacement were noticeable in an all

round team performance.

East Newport Cycle Speedway Club

maintain their top position

Posted 22/07/08

East Newport Cycle Speedway Club maintained their position

at the top of the South West Division 1 table, with an impressive

home victory against Filton last Sunday.

Right from the start the Eastenders took control of the match easily

beating their opponents from the starts & pulled off several impressive

passes.

Each team member played their part in the 98 - 82 victory with

particularly impressive performances from Kieran Jones, Aaron Hughes

& new signing Neil Power who returned to racing after a 17 year absence.

The victory now leaves the team well positioned in their quest for league

success, but with several difficult away fixtures yet to be raced, this good

form will need to be repeated if their position is to be maintained.

East Newport Cycle Speedway Club, sponsored ride

Posted 18/07/08

East Newport Cycle Speedway Club Members & friends will be doing a sponsored ride at their Larch Grove circuit Underwood on Sunday 27th July, Public Relations Officer Gilbert Davis takes up the story.

Over the last few weeks the Club has suffered from vandalism & the latest spate was our pits wall which keeps all the riders in one place being smashed down. This is so demoralising for everyone connected with the Club, which has only been going for the past three years, we are not blessed with a great deal of money in the club, & it is hoped that by doing this sponsored ride we can raise enough money to erect a new fence.

If there are any potential sponsors or individuals who would like to help the club then that would be very much appreciated, you can contact me at gilb_thebear@yahoo.co.uk

Brown British Youth & Junior League at Bury last weekend.

With 26 of the country's top riders competing, this was going to be a

tough match for the young East Ender, & with non stop rain throughout

the match did very well in making it through to the final, dropping only 1 point.

In the Final Hughes came home in an impressive 2ND place & hopes that the next National round at Southampton 9Th August will be rain free, said the current South West under 14  leader.
