Report: Brtish Team finals promoted by East Newport Speedway
| East Newport Cycle Speedway Club held the biggest Cycle Speedway event ever to be staged in Wales on Sunday 13Th September when they staged this years "British Team Championships" semi-finals & final,.
The Club has only been going 4 years this October and to think that British Cycling awarded them this prestigious match shows that they had all the confidence that they could put on a great show and the spectacle that they put on anyone would think that they have been around for many a year.
The four teams battling it out to make the Final were Wednesfield v Poole and Horspath v Stoke. Last years winners Wednesfield made there way to the final defeating Poole 93 - 87 and Horspath defeated Stoke 102 - 77 to set up a Midlands v South West grand final.
Before the Grand Final "Newport Gwent Dragons" cheer leaders "Dragons Claw" entertained the large crowd and guest of honour "The Mayor Of Newport" Mr Glyn Jarvis was presented to both Wednesfield and Horspath teams before taking his seat for a pulsating final and what a final it turned out to be with the scores level at half time 43 - 43.
Wednesfield moved 8 points in the lead 72 - 64 and with only four races to go it looked as if Horspath had blown there chances of glory, but with the Midland side suffering two exclusions in heat 15 the title was up for grabs again. With a 5 5 in heat 16 & a Mike Morgans exclusion for legging in heat 17 Horspath found themselves 4 points down going into the last heat and with Horspath's Steve Harris & Mark Boaler gaining that all important 7 3 in heat 18 which meant the scores were tied at 86 - 86 the scene was set for 3 extra races, heat 19 saw Wednesfield riders Mark Griffiths & Chris Jewkes take a 6 - 4 92 90, heat 20 Horspath hit back with a great ride from young Welsh rider Mark Carmichael & Steve Harris to gain a 7 - 3 95 - 97 this was the first time that the team from Oxford had taken the lead, heat 21 all Horspath needed to win the title was a drawn heat & this they got with Mark Boaler coming home in first place followed by "British Individual Champion" Lee Aris, Scott Doherty 3rd and Danny Harper 4Th the final score being 100 - 102. After some exciting and passionate racing, Horspath won the day in style
This was a great Final and one that everyone will be talking about for a very long time, well done to Horspath on winning their 2ND "British Team Championship" & to Wednesfield for making it that some described as the best final they had seen in years.
As for where the Final was staged this was the very first time that these Championships have ever been held in Wales and "East Newport" put on a great show a lot of time and effort went into this meeting and they should be congratulated on doing a fantastic job .
One official from the commission who was at the East Newport Polo for the very first time is looking forward to seeing more major finals come there way on a track that is not all about speed but track craft aswell. |

REPORT: 2009 British Finals,British Individual
under 10's under 16's & Ladies Championship's
East Newport Cycle Speedway Club riders recently took part in the British Individual under 10's under 16's & Ladies Championship's which were being held in the Midlands this past bank holiday weekend.
Bretford was the first port of call where the under 10's & Ladies Championship was taking place. All the East End u10's Sean Bennett, Callum Goward, Ethan Lewis & Tudor Coombes made it through to their first British Final & all did extremely well on the tight & well prepared Bretford circuit. Next up was Laura Bennett who gave a good account of herself but unfortunately missed out on the final of the Ladies.
U10's
Then it was the turn of Aaron Hughes & Ryan Lewis to fly the flag for the Goride/Clubmark Club in the u16's at Wednesfield, both qualified comfortably for the semi finals where a top eight finish would guarantee a place in the final the following day at Leicester. Aaron made his first British final scoring 15 points, but a fall by Ryan in his last race put an end to his chances.
Aaron Hughes on way to winning 4th race
In the Final itself Aaron put in a very gusty performance scoring 10 points which included a very good win in his 4Th ride when in 3rd place at one point.
A spokesman for the Club said, the City of Newport should be proud of the fact that there were three Welsh riders in the u16's final Aaron Hughes, Horspath's Mark Carmichael who came home in 2ND place after a runoff & Poole's Ben Mould who is now British u16's Champion after scoring 19 points . It was 30 years to the date 31st August & at the same Leicester track that Newport Dragons rider Nicky Davies won Wales 1st ever British Individual Championship in the u18's, Ben now joins East Newport's Louis Harvey u13 in becoming the 2ND Welsh rider this year to win a British Individual Championship, & on the showing of all the Welsh riders who rode so well over the bank holiday weekend, this surely wont be the last.

REPORT: 3rd Successive Youth and Junior GP win for East Newport
This past weekend East Newport young cycle speedway stars achieved their third successive youth and junior league grand prix victory to finish in second place overall in the South West Region, missing out by a single point to winners Exeter.
The small Horspath circuit presents its own unique challenges for riders, but with many of the East Newport riders racing on the Oxfordshire circuit for the first time victory seemed unlikely.
In a competition where Individual points combine to achieve an overall team total, the character of the East End youngsters once again shone through with five of the riders reaching the A Finals.
Sean Bennett won his sixth u8's final, British u13's Champion Louis Harvey triumphed in the u14's category, Adam Bennett qualified for his first u12's final, Ryan Lewis and Aaron Hughes once again reached the u16's final. The remaining East End riders combined to score enough points to enable the East Newport to pull off what can only be described as a fantastic victory.
This August Bank Holiday weekend brings the annual staging of the open, under 16's, under 10's and girls British Individual Championships. This years staging takes place in the Midland Region with the Go-ride/Clubmark East Newport Club being represented by; Sean Bennett, Tudor Coombs, Ethan Lewis and Callum Goward in the u10's; Ryan Lewis and Aaron Hughes in the u16's; and Laura Bennett in the girls, Laura would have been joined by team mate Tania Smith, who is now unable to take her place in the finals due to a fall she sustained last weekend at Horspath, and after a visit to the hospital finds herself with a broken ankle.
REPORT: East Newport Cycle Speedway Club Sports Day
This coming Saturday 8Th August 1pm at Larch Grove Playing Fields Underwood East Newport Cycle Speedway host for the first time a sports day for all riders & members of the Goride / Clubmark Cycling Club.
Organiser Kerry Bennett who is a Child Welfare Officer of the Club takes up the story.
A few people at the Club was asking what can we do in the summer (what summer) other than Cycle Speedway, so I came up with the idea of having a sports day, its different & most can either join in or help. There will be no Cycle Speedway going on that day that is one guarantee. Some Club's within our sport has nicknames like Lions, Hammers, Robins, so the winning team can then choose a name to go after East Newport as long as its clean. Such is the keenness of the Club Members that the sports day has already been pencilled in to become an annual event.
The Team Captains & names for the four side competing are Richard Hughes (The Flying Hawks) who will be joined by Kerry Bennett, Daniel McDonald, Shannon Bennett, Tudor Coombes, Charlie McDonald, Oliver McDonald & Richard Morrison.
Rob Absalom (The Pasta Munchers) & in his side will be Nigel Clark, Gary Brain, Josh Davis, Danny Oliviera, Callum Goward, Nicky Goward & Charlie Clark.
Ian Sizer (The Von Traps) will be joined by Colin Wildy, Jack Turner, Nelson Oliviera, William Oliviera, Adam Bennett, Anthony Oliviera & Liam Morris.
Gilbert Davis (The Flatley's) & in his side will be Keith Bennett, Laura Bennett, Aaron Hughes, Earl Broomfield, Ieuan Payne, Sean Bennett, & Caitlyn Goodwin.
Some of the events that will take place are Skipping, Egg & Spoon, Sack, Rely, & many more, so a fun day is sure to be had by the family run East End Club.
None of this would have been possible without the help of Anne Marie Payne, Bev Hughes, Mandy Absalom & Beryl Bennett.
REPORT: National Junior League GP - Sean Bennett
East Newport Cycle Speedway Club under 8's rider Sean Bennett competed in the second of four British National Junior League GP this past weekend 1st August at Sandwell.
Sean who lost his first ever race in this years GP still made his way though to the A Final after scoring 15 points. Determined not to lose the A Final and stay at top of the GP standings he sped from the gate to win his second National GP in fine fashion
East Newport Cycle Speedway Club were defeated for the first time at home this season to current South West Division One leaders and favourites for the league Horspath Hammers.
All of the East Enders gave 100% effort on the well prepared circuit, and the scoreline of 81 - 97 does not reflect how close the racing was.
Two of the Hammers riders Mike Morgans and Mark Carmichael recorded fine maximums, and would have been joined by team mate Mark Boaler but he was defeated by young East End rider Aaron Hughes in the final heat of this fixture.

REPORT: South West Regional Gold Cup Final
Last Sunday 26th July East Newport Cycle Speedway Team competed in the prestigious South West Regional Gold Cup Final. In a top class field the East Enders were regarded by many to be the weakest team in the final, but the team surprised their far more experienced opponents to secure a magnificent forty three points.
With the East Enders fielding three fourteen year old and one thirteen year old, little was expected of the team but on numerous occasions the brilliant young side matched and even outpaced their rivals on the notoriously difficult Swindon circuit, with their enthusiasm and team spirit winning much praise from their opponents.
Such was the enthusiasm of the youngsters to race, that team reserve Club stalwart Mike Rice did not have the opportunity to compete in a single race. With the youngsters gaining such valuable experience during 2009, it will only be a matter of time before the Goride/Clubmark East Newport Club win their first major trophy.

Louis turned in a performance beyond his years to win a thrilling final at Kesgrave, edging out Matt Haddock from Wednesfield. Third place went to defending champion Matt Mildon from Poole after a run off with Stockport 2006 rider Jake Read.
A spokesman from the Club said "After last year's disappointment when Louis was well in contention to finish in the top 3 of the u13 before machinery failure, it is fantastic news. It just goes to show that he was well focused for this which was his last chance to win the British under 13 Individual Championship, as next year he will be racing in the u16 category. REPORT: Narrow loss for East Newport
Last Sunday 28th June East Newport Cycle Speedway division one team lost a hard fought match away to Hellingly Lions 95-85.
On the notoriously difficult, but well prepared East Sussex circuit the young East End Team produced a performance to equal any previous performances by the Go-ride/Clubmark team in its short four year history.
From the start the Eastenders were quick from the gates adapting to the tracks tight bends, with only a few basic errors preventing the team from leading the match at half time.
The second half saw the home team build up a fourteen point advantage, but the Eastenders hit back with several heat wins to narrowly fall short of the winning score.
ENCSC always win and lose as a team, but the performances of Aaron Hughes, Louis Harvey, Ryan Lewis and debutant Jack Turner deserve special praise.

NEWS: East Newport Cycle Speedway Club create a bit of history
East Newport Cycle Speedway Club created a bit of history this past weekend when they raced for the first time in the British Team under 10's championship at Exeter.
With the top two sides from the semi-finals qualifying for the final, the East End youngsters went on their quest to qualify for their first British Team Final, and this they did winning their semi final by 53 points over Ipswich 45, Horspath 39, Wednesfield 38 and Sheffield 25.
A jubilant Manager Tony Bennett said "to think that we have only been going 4 years, to make the Final is great for everyone connected with the Goride/Clubmark East End Club. Many of the other riders towered above our riders and the talk from some quarters had suggested that we would be an easy target, but how wrong they were! With many of the team still being in the same age group next year things are looking great for the Club."
In the Final East Newport came up against Exeter who ran out comfortable winners on 55 points, Kesgrave were 2nd on 47, East Newport 3rd on 36 points and Ipswich 4th on 22. There was no man of the match award as all of the East End riders; Taylor Carey, Ethan Lewis, Callum Goward, Tudor Coombs and Sean Bennett rode extremely well.
Then it was the turn of the under 16's to race in a rearranged South West Junior league GP, with East Newport leading on 232 and Exeter closely behind on 221 it was down to the u16 riders to try and win the Club's first ever Junior League victory. With two newcomers taking to the track for only their second time, both Jack Turner and Earl Bloomfield did very well, and their points together with the points of Aaron Hughes, Dan Bock and Ryan Lewis enabled the East Newport Club to come home in first place. Exeter finished 2nd on 235, they hadn't lost a South West GP in 3 years, Horspath 214, Newport 168, Poole 113, Southampton 20, Filton 15. With only 2 more South West GP to go and with more riders joining our club, it looks as if we will reach our goal of finishing in the top 3 this year.

REPORT: Neil Power has been selected for Wales
East Newport Cycle Speedway Club raced a re-arranged South West Junior League GP this past weekend at Newport. The Grand Prix was scheduled to take place the weekend before at Filton but due to the bad weather it was cancelled.
Once again all of the Goride/Clubmark East Newport riders gave it their all: Nicky Goward, Bradley Davies, Eistyn Lewis (under 8's); Anthony Olivera, Tudor Coombs, Taylor Carey, Ryan Davies, Callum Goward, Ethan Lewis, Craig Williams, Ieuan Payne (under 10's); Dan Oliviera, Adam Bennett, Khalid Mitha, Adil Mitha (under 12's); Louis Harvey, William Oliviera, Josh Davis, Nelson Oliviera (under 14's); Colin Widly (under 18's).
Sean Bennett recorded his fourth GP win of the season, but it was the performance's of Man of the match Richard Morrison under 8's and, all of the lady riders Tania Smith, Laura Bennett, Sharon John and Amena Mitha that caught the eye of the East End management.

With the scores reading East Newport 232, Exeter 221, Horspath 190, Newport 181, Poole 82, Southampton 20 and Filton 15, it will be all down to the under 16's on 20th June at Exeter to try and defend the ENCSC lead. (no pressure!)

REPORT: South West Rose Bowl
Go ride/Clubmark Cycle Speedway Club East Newport, competed in this years South West Rose Bowl, which is open to all South West Club's not competing in the premier league.
The top 4 teams from the Rose Bowl would join seeded club's Poole [&] Horspath in the prestigious Gold Cup in July. With Filton withdrawing from the meeting due to a shortage of riders (which is a bit of a mystery considering they have the use of all Newport CSC riders to ride for them in South West Team events), the remaining five club's; Exeter (last years winners), hosts Hellingly, Swindon, Southampton and East Newport proceeded on a well prepared circuit to try and win the 2009 Rose Bowl.
In all fairness the winners were always going to be out of Swindon, Hellingly and Southampton with Exeter and East Newport trying to take points off the top three and finish in the all important Gold Cup spot of 4th place.
Swindon finished the meeting in 3rd place on 41 points, Hellingly 2nd on 46 and Southampton deserved winners on 48.
All of the Exeter riders gave 100% and in Craig Nethercott who scored 12 points, it is only a matter of time before a premier league side snaps him up.
As for the East Enders it was all about qualifying for the Gold Cup and this they did by pipping Exeter by just 2 points. Aaron Hughes topped scored with 12 points and was backed up very well by Man Of The Match Rob Absalom, the other three East End riders Neil Power, Ryan Lewis and Nigel Clark were always in the thick of the action.
The match was well marshalled by top referee Mike Legg, and to see the current British Champion on show when surely his services would have been much more appreciated in a premier league clash just goes to show that regional events like these are just as important.

East Newport vs Swindon Robins
28/04/09
East Newport Cycle Speedway Club raced a South West Division one fixture against Swindon Robins. The East Enders should have raced their first away match of the season against Filton, but due to the Flyer's not having enough riders the fixture was cancelled, & then hastily arranged the home match against the Robins.
Captain Neil Power leading...
Both teams seemed evenly matched & at the half way stage the East Newport held a 5 point lead 47 - 42, there was never really more than 5 points in the match until heat 16 when Robins rider Martin Glover moved at the tapes & was excluded, the sole Swindon rider left in the race tried to split the 2 East End riders up to keep them in with a chance of winning the match, but to no avail, & after the final 2 races of this 18 heat fixture the East End outfit came home with the 2 points in the bag 92 - 86.
The East End management was pleased with all the riders, in particular Matt Davis, Aaron Hughes & Mike Rice, & with a tough away fixture coming up away to last years South West Champions Poole the team will need to keep up this good form if they are going to get a positive result in 3 weeks time.
East Newport Scores
Nigel Clark 11, Aaron Hughes 12+3
Neil Power 13, Mike Rice 7
Matt Davis 12+3, Nicky Evans 14

East Newport Cycle Speedway - Local derby
27/04/09
East Newport Cycle Speedway Club Conference League side took on local rivals Newport at their International Sports Village track. The sore-line of 82 67 to Newport would have been much closer, due to some dubious decisions by the home referee.
For the East Enders Aaron Hughes, Ryan Lewis, Louis Harvey & Man Of The Match Dan Bock all had a very impressive match.
Impressive venue, Dan Bock and Louis Harvey go at it...
A spokesman for the Club said, all eight of our riders gave 100% effort, & time Iis very much on there side, but what is so pleasing about the East Newport set up is, we could go out & win at all costs by signing up 2nd re licence riders to race in the conference league, but after speaking to the Conference Management they said we would not be going down that route, to leave out home based riders.
East Newport scores
Louis Harvey 12+2, Dan Bock 11+2

South West Junior League GP
East Newport Cycle Speedway Club hosted the third round of this years South West Junior League GP last weekend, & with a big crowd in attendance, and the track in top condition the scene was set for some top racing on the East End Polo from all of the South West competitors.
First up was the under 8's and Sean Bennett went unbeaten once again, there was also improved performances from Nicky Goward, Eistyn Lewis and debut rider Jack Richards.
Then it was the turn of the u10's and all of these riders rode above themselves Craig Williams, Tudor Coombes, Anthony Oliviera, Taylor Carey, Joshua England, Ethan Lewis and Callum Goward.
Flying the flag in the u12's was Adil Mitha, Danny Oliviera, Khalid Mitha and Adam Bennett who had his best match in this years Grand Prix.
In the under 14's, Louis Harvey, William Oliviera, Josh Davis and Nelson Oliviera did extremely well, to keep the East Enders in with a chance of winning this Grand Prix.

With Aaron Hughes, Dan Bock and Ryan Lewis taking to the track in the u16's category these riders kept the East End Club in the lead with only two age groups left.
With Exeter tracking 3 riders to East Newport's only rider (Colin Wildy) in the u18's age group this was a great chance for them to pull back the 23 point deficit, and this they did taking a 8 point lead.
Sharon on 3 and Tania on 2
With the scores reading Exeter 224, East Newport 216, Horspath 200, Newport 124, Poole 97, Southampton 61 and Filton 12, we came to the last category of the day which was the ladies. With Exeter red hot favourites to win their 3rd GP this year, it was a case of could debut riders Tania Smith and Sharon John keep the East End Club in 2nd place, and this they did, both riders got better race by race and they are both looking forward to the next GP in June at Filton.
A Club spokesman said, all the riders from the club rode extremely well and to think that 2 years ago we only had one or two riders taking part in GP events, to finish 2nd ahead of more experience clubs is a great achievement. If we could finish in the top 3 this year it would be a great thing for the Go-ride / Clubmark Welsh Club.
Poole v East Newport
East Newport Cycle Speedway Club travelled to Poole to race in three South West Matches, first up was the division 1 clash, and with last seasons division 1 champions Poole tracking a very strong side, there was only ever going to be one result in this fixture, with Poole running out convincing winners 119 - 61.
Assistant East Newport Manager Gilbert Davis said "we knew 2 weeks ago that we didn't have the side to compete with Poole in the division one encounter, and could have quite easily tried to call this fixture off. With riders unavailable either due to work, injury, or family commitments this was one fixture we could have done without, but due to the fact that we have got plenty of riders in the club, we decided not to try and call this fixture off. We could like other South West Club's go out and get 2nd re licence riders in from other regions or even fly them in from Poland, but why should we when all your doing is leaving home grown talent out."
