10 Questions With Kyleigh Manners
Kyleigh Manners is one of the new breed of cycling coaches making a positive impact on one of Welsh Cycling’s GoRide clubs, Newport Velo.

This Velodrome based club has developed massively over the last couple of years and with a new influx of coaches going through the UKCC Level 2 coaching course and track add on they are doing a great job at getting more kids on bikes and into racing.
What is your background in Cycling?
I have been riding a bike as long as I can remember, but took up time trialling when I was age 20. I have ridden the etape du tour, the end – end in 2003 and have been on the track for the past 2 1/2 years, mainly trying to sprint!
How long have you been involved in Coaching?
I qualified with UKCC Level 2 last year and have been coaching since.
What are your motivations for coaching?
I just want to get more kids on bikes and try and teach them new skills.
What would you like to achieve in coaching terms?
My next goal is to complete UKCC Level 3 and continue the work I have been doing with Newport Velo.
Have you found any new talents that you think could be the next Nicole or Geraint?
Yes there has recently been a lot of new talent coming through since the Olympics so watch this space!
Being a keen cyclist yourself what would you say is your most prized cycling possession?
My Mavic I0 front 5 spoke wheel. Thanks to a very understanding wife!
You were out in Paris for the finish of the tour this year.
How inspiring was it as a coach and cyclist to watch some of the best cyclists in the world live?
It was amazing to see how strong they all looked especially after doing so much work in the 3 weeks leading up to the finish! It was also an indication of the commitment required to reach this kind of level in cycling.
Do you have a coaching tip for aspiring volunteers looking to become qualified coaches?
Keep it fun and enjoyable, try and make all the sessions the type that you would like to ride yourself. Always try and create a positive attitude especially around youth riders.
What is your favourite cycling drill you do with the youth cyclists in Newport Velo?
Slalom cones on the track is always good fun, making them harder every time challenges bike handling skills.
Who do you prefer Britney or Christina?
Both can come knocking anytime.
