British Cycling Councils

Most of the day to day running of British Cycling is undertaken by elected volunteers.  In England there are ten regions - South West, South, South East, Central, Eastern, West Midlands, East Midlands, Yorkshire, North West and North East.  In Scotland and Wales the Scottish Cyclists Union and Welsh Cycling Union look after the day to day affairs of British Cycling.

Any affiliated club, incorporating any cycle discipline can nominate a representative at the regional AGM.  These club representatives can recommend changes to technical regulations and make suggestions to the regional board on behalf of the club.  The number of club representatives is dependant on the number of affiliated British Cycling members in the club, as follows:

1 representative for 9 members
2 representatives for 10 to 24 members
3 representatives for 25 to 39 members
4 representatives for 40 to 54 members
5 representatives for 55 members or over

Each region will have a council that includes a Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, Regional Manager, Regional Competition Administrator.  The regional committee will also be able to identify additional volunteers whom will be able for fill roles pertinent to the region.  At the end of each year these regional committees will be able to nominate regional councillors to go to the National Council meeting.

There are also commissions that deal with specific issues within disciplines and members of these commissions are drawn from the National Council, the relevant officer, and other interested volunteers with a particular stake in that discipline.

The Executive Board includes the President and eight honorary directors.  The directors are elected regional councillors who can vote on all items of business.  The Chief Executive, Company Secretary, and one representative from both Sport England and UK Sport are permitted to attend the National Council meeting and speak, however are unable to vote.

This committee structure allows governance for British Cycling to come from within its membership.
