Manchester Velodrome News

News Posted: 15 May 2008

Manchester Velodrome has announced that a Masters Track League will be run at the Velodrome on a Sunday evening during the summer, to build up to the European Masters Track Championships which are on at the Velodrome between 28th July and 2nd August. This new Sunday night track league is for riders 30 years old or better, and is open to any BC licence holder born in 1978 or earlier. There are 55 hours of track league racing planned, so riders can use the league as preparation for the British, European and World Masters Track Championships. The league is open to British Cycling licence holders, or European riders with a UCI code on their licence.

The League is sponsored by Sports Tours International. A surplus of funds from the Masters Track League will be reinvested in the European Masters Track Championships in Manchester, and also help fund a bid to see the return of the World Masters Track Championships to Manchester.

There will also be 22 specific Structured Masters Training sessions at Manchester Velodrome in June and July to allow riders preparation for the European Masters Track Championships, totalling 42 hours of track time. There will be a special Masters Accreditation issued for entrants in the European Masters Track Championships, if those riders do not have Manchester Velodrome accreditation. Masters accreditation forms are available from Manchester Velodrome, and these sessions must be booked in advance with the Velodrome.

There are three endurance ability groups, where riders can choose what distances they want to race, and three sprint ability groups with the same criteria. Where time allows, there will be pursuiting and team sprints. Gate start efforts can be provided during warm up sessions. In order to achieve 'volume' sprinting, there will be Keirin racing; this will be the only non-championship event in the Track League. All other events will be those included in the British, European and World Masters Track Championships.

Entry forms are available from the Velodrome, and riders must enter one week in advance. The first evening is Sunday 1st June, and is a two hour session, so it will be sprint specific, where the new group of officials can try out the sprint programme. It then runs through until the 27th July, 6.00-10.00pm each night. There won't be a Masters Track League on Sunday 6th July, as the British Masters Track Championships are in Newport.

Race Dates: 01 June, 08 June, 15 June, 22 June, 29 June, 13 July, 20 July, 27 July, 31 August, 14 September, 21 September, 28 September, 05 October

European Masters Training dates: Special European Masters Track accreditation will be issued to riders who have entered the European Masters Track Championships. This will entitle Euro riders to ride all other structured sessions, except the Derny session. Must be booked and paid for in advance with Manchester Velodrome reception: 0161 223 2244 (Option3)
