Wolverhampton Cycle Track League News - A Golden Anniversary and More!

News Posted: 28 April 2008

Below is all the news from Wolverhampton Wheelers CC:

It is only two weeks to go to the start of the 2008 Wolverhampton Track League!

The BIG news is that the track league is now sponsored by FRED WILLIAMS CYCLES. Fred's have had a long association with the organisers, Wolverhampton Wheelers Cycling Club, including supporting leading riders such as Andy Tennant (Former World Junior Champion) and putting up some impressive prizes for the Fred Williams Scramble (Cyclo-Cross).

With Fred's support the track league now has over £500 in the prize pot. This will be spread across all the categories. Download the registration form and put the 7th May in your diary. Go to www.wolverhamptonwheelers.co.uk for more info.

By a happy coincidence it is exactly 50 years since Wolverhampton's EXPRESS & STAR newspaper supported the league in 1958 and donated a resplendent silver trophy, which is still awarded annually to the overall winner.

The newly refurbished velodrome at ALDERSLEY LEISURE VILLAGE (Aldersley Road, W-ton.) offers a first class facility with a super fast surface, grandstand, excellent floodlighting, showers, changing rooms and a bar! This year's competition will be red hot! Will it be another year in which the young sprockets show the way or will the old cranks experience gain the upper hand? If training sessions show anything it's that the result is wide open. Many new faces have been turning to track bikes on Monday and Wednesday evenings to join the old hands. There are two categories of racing, an 'A' class & a 'B' Class, for seniors, juniors, veterans and women.
We haven't forgotten the youngsters. Youth A, B and C can race on track bikes, whilst there are also races for freewheelers (under 12 year olds). Freewheeler races should be over by 8.30. Twelve best rides will count towards riders overall position in either the A or B league.

Race Entry:

Seniors/Veterans/Women: £6, Juniors £5 per session, plus one off registration fee of £5
Under 16s 'Youth': £3 plus one off registration fee of £1 (Youth riders may with ride seniors at organisers' discretion)
Under 12s: 'Freewheelers' = £1 plus one off registration fee of £1 (Free wheel bikes).
