British Junior & Youth Track Championships

This coming weekend sees the start of a big week for the Junior and Youth riders in Britain when the annual British Cycling Track Championships are held for Junior and Youth (Under 16, Under 14, Under 12) riders. The championships kick off on the Sunday (19th) with the Sprint and Youth Endurance events whilst many of the Junior endurance riders are occupied elsewhere at the Junior Road Race Championships. The events then continue until Friday when the championships will be concluded.
The Track championships will see the first airing of the 2007 World Champions jersey worn by GB's all conquering sprinter Christian Lyte who won the World Junior Keirin title in Mexico only two weeks ago. Other World Champions competing will be David Daniell and Peter Mitchell who with Lyte, won Gold in the Team Sprint which sadly is not a British Junior Championship event so no chance for them to wear their Rainbow jerseys. Lyte and Mitchell are also World Championship medallists from Mexico whilst Daniell was the fastest qualifier for the Worlds (and European Champion) so expect some great battles in the Junior Sprint events with those three and a clutch of others ready to take a scalp or two.
The British Juniors who made such a name for themselves in Mexico at the Worlds return to try and add to their collection of British titles.
The list of entries has many other up and coming stars. These include Jessica Varnish who won Silver in the Sprint at the Worlds recently and is a favourite for the sprint events and may be even the endurance ones. Alex Greenfield, European champion 2007, may have a thing to say about the latter events though and is sure to be on the podium at Newport in her home country of Wales. Of the endurance riders in the Juniors, the European Team Pursuit championship riders Adam Blythe, Luke Rowe, Peter Kennaugh and Mark McNally have their chance of adding to there growing trophy collections and other key championship contenders include Tom Buck, Andrew Fenn and and Joshua Hargreaves.
The youth events too will be very competitive if the rounds of the Youth Omnium Series are anything to go by and picking a winner from any one of a dozen riders in the various categories is difficult although Laura Trott is one rider who's winning ability stands out in the Under 16 girls. In the Under 16 boys, Kian Emadi was in great winning form at Manchester last weekend and is one of the favourites for the Under 16 Boys events -- which ones its hard to tell as he was winning sprint and endurance races at Manchester!
Under 16 Boys Youth Series winner on the track, Felix English, however showed he is no slouch either and will be one of Emadi's closest rivals. The standard though in Britain right now is such that these riders are by no means certain to be winners as there are loads of others eager to make a name for themselves and who knows, make a career in cycling for Great Britain like many before than have done.
Programme Correction: The event programme for the Championships incorrectly states that the Female Under 16 500 metre Time Trial trial championship title holder as being Joanne Wilman. It is Rebecca James, holder of the record (37.016) for this event.
