EVENING SESSION
The podium girls for the week long Track Championships, three of the many volunteers who made the week possible, Abbie Collins, Claire Rutherford and Stacey Jackson.
Women's Keirin
Victoria Pendleton has brought some star quality to these championships and it was great to see her taking on the best of the younger British riders again in the Keirin. Her victory in the final was completely expected but no less breath-taking as she blasted clear in the last lap and left the others standing. Anna Blyth took second just ahead of Jess Varnish. In some ways the rivalry between Blyth and Varnish promises to be one of the features of the next couple of seasons, as these two talented young riders seek to match Pendleton and become genuinely world class at senior level, having proved themselves at Junior level.
Victoria Pendleton leads Anna Blyth at the bell.
Earlier, in the first round of the women's Keirin, Heat 2 was the one to watch with European Champion Jess Varnish taking on GB team-mate Anna Blyth. With the top two going through to the final of right, these two made a move as soon as the derney had pulled off and although Charline Joiner showed a good turn of speed in chasing them down, Blyth and Varnish had enough in hand to qualify comfortably. In the first heat Victoria Pendleton cruised round on the front, with only Helen Scott able to stay with her and these two crossed the line well clear of the other three riders. Charline Joiner, then made amends for her earlier near miss with a fine ride to go through via the repechage, holding off Alex Greenfield.

Women's Pursuit
History was made in the women's pursuit finals, with Sarah Storey demolishing the opposition to claim the title. In her ride off for gold, she was three seconds up at the 1km point and on a charge, well inside her qualifying time. Her opponent, Emma Trott, had no answer to the Paralympic champion and the catch was inevitable and came at just over three minutes. Storey, who had such a remarkable Paralympics, smashing her p.b. to claim gold in the pursuit, is the first paralympic athlete to win an individual gold medal in a senior track championship in this country.
The bronze medal ride off was a very close affair, with Hamel going off very quickly, but being pegged back by Sadler-Andrews. Both were well inside their qualifying times ate every time check. It wasn't until the final kilometre that Hamel dragged herself into a winning position as Sadler-Andrews began to fade, but even at the very end the gap was coming back down again, reflecting a very close hard-fought race. Hamel went ton to win by just under 2 seconds.

Men's Keirin
The final of the men's Keirin was Matt Crampton's chance to win a fourth national titles at this championships. As defending champion, he was a clear favourite ahead of the slightly off-colour Craig MacLean. The race was a full blooded affair, with Ivor Reid the first to kick. He was brought back by MacLean and Hill, who collided with MacLean and only just held the resulting twitch. Then Crampton surged over the top of everyone at 300m to go and although MacLean got his wheel, the Scot had no answer to the SiS rider, who did indeed cap a great week with a fourth national title. Christian Lyte took the bronze medal.
Matthew Crampton leads at the bell and the positions of the top three stayed the same all the way to the line.
Earlier, the first men's Keirin semi went to Matt Crampton who held back till the other riders committed themselves, then simply turned on the gas with two laps to go and was a couple of lengths clear of Christina Lyte and Steven Hill at the line, these three going through to the final.
The second semi was controlled by Croag MacLean, who sat on the front and kept himself out of trouble. He was joined in qualifying for the final by David Daniell, who left his surge for the line quite late, and Ivor Reid who simply kept his head down in MacLean's wake. Surprise non-qualifier was Peter Mitchell, who allowed himself to get blocked at the back of the field and couldn't quite match Daniell's over-the-top surge to the line.

Team Pursuit
The Team Pursuit final saw a great ride by the Agiskoviner squad, who looked really well drilled and well-matched. They caught their opponents, VC st Raphael, in fine style after just over three and half minutes, before going on to record a time of just over 4 minutes 31 seconds, well inside their qualifying time from the afternoon. They even did an extra lap before they realised they were finished, such was their tunnel vision! Perhaps it was a lap on honour. Whatever, they deserved their medals.
The bronze medal final was close on paper and the race itself lived up to it. Scunthorpe kept edging ahead through the first three km, only to be brought back. They had a 0.7 second lead at one point, but suddenly they went down to 3 men at the 3km point. MJS kept themselves together far better in the closing three laps to win by almost 8 tenths in the end. It was a classic see-saw encounter, with both teams bettering their qualifying time and really riding to their limits.
