Women's Scratch Race
The Women's Scratch race was a very aggressively ridden, high quality affair, despite a small field. There were numerous attacks throughout, which probably had much to do with the presence of the world's best sprinter, Victoria Pendleton, a former champion.
Katie Colclough of the Halfords Bike Hut team was one of three riders to crash very early in the race. The three all came down heavily on the home straight, but thankfully all got up unhurt and re-joined, Meanwhile Emma Trott, also of Halfords, took the opportunity to try a break off the front, but she was brought back. Katie Colclough then also tried her luck but was also reeled in. Both Halfords riders continued to set the pace for much of the fist half of the race. Alex Greenfield, another of the early fallers, was also frequently active at the front.
The constant attacking finally got to Victoria Pendleton, who pulled out with 15 laps to go, happy no doubt with a good workout. Lucy Martin put in a fine solo attempt to get clear at the same time and for six or seven laps she looked like she might stay away, but the rest of the field never completely let her get out of sight, her lead being restricted to just under half a lap. With 6 laps to go, Martin relented and it all came back together.
Ella Sadler Andrews than made her first significant move of the race and gave the rest of the field a real target for the last couple of laps. She was caught in the final bend and Hannah Rich led the field round to take the win from Pinarello RT teamate Alex Greenfield, with Lucy Martin third.

Open Sprint
The final for gold saw Matt Crampton take the first heat from Craig MacLean, who just couldn't get past his rival in the last half lap, having taken a run at him from high on the banking with about 300m to go. In the second heat MacLean looked to have it sewn up when he went from the front with a lap to go and even into the final bend he was seemingly holding off his younger rival. But Crampton has marginally the better form at the moment and he squeezed past on the line. The official winning margin for Crampton was just 13cm.
The bronze medal ride-off saw David Daniell very smartly hold off Christian Lyte in the last lap and a half and then simply out-drag him when they turned up the gas in the last lap. In the second heat Daniel underlined his superiority by coming round his rival in the final bend and winning by a half length to take the bronze medal.
Earlier, Matt Crampton won both his semi finals against Christian Lyte by controlling them from the front. Lyte just couldn't quite get on terms in the last half lap and had to give way to his more experienced rival. Craig MacLean took his semi against David Daniell in straight rides too, controlling the first from the front and coming past Daniell with 200m to go in the second.

____________________________________________________B Sprint
The B Sprint semi finals went in straight heats to Kevin Stewart and Robin Thompson, who both had just a bit too much for their rivals, former GB rider David Heald and newcomer David Readle respectively.
Readle and Heald met again in the ride-off for third place and the latter was a fairly straightforward winner in two straight rides, but Readle has impressed in his first ever championships and it will be interesting to see how he develops.
The first place final went the way of Kevin Stewart over Robin Thompson, the Scot able to find a little more in the final metres in both heats, though the second was won by little more than a tyre width.

Open Pursuit
The Open Pursuit final pitched Rob Hayles against recent Olympic bronze medallist Steven Burke, They qualified within 2 tenths of a second of each other and the final was a genuinely mouthwatering prospect. Hayles went into his expected lead after a couple of laps, but Burke came right back at him and was himself leading after a kilometre. At the mid-way point Burke had 1.3 seconds lead over the national Road champion.
That went out to 1.7, but Hayles came back briefly, before Burke took it out to 2 seconds with 4 laps to go. From then into the finish it was all Burke, though Hayles never buckled and the final margin of victory was just over 2 seconds. The final for Bronze went the way of Michael Hutchinson, with his rather distinctive upright style, who was always pulling away from Mark McNally. Neither quite matched their qualification time.
