Scott, Blyth and Chisholm on the 500TT podium

Two of the GB Team's recent successes at the European Championships, Anna Blyth and Matt Crampton were the stars of the show on the opening night of the 2008 National Senior Track Championships.

Anna Blyth gets off the line in aggressive style

Blyth was an extremely comfortable winner in the 500m Time Trial, going off last and demolishing the second best time of Helen Scott of Healsowen to the tune of almost a second and a half. Alison Chisholm of Edinburgh RC was third.

In the Men's Kilo, there was an altogether tougher task facing Crampton. He knew that amongst the riders going off before him were former national record holder, Craig MacLean, and young gun sprinters Christian Lyte and David Daniell.

However, there was a turn up when Olympic Pursuit bronze medallist Steven Burke signed on to ride. Burke had surprised many with his time of 1:03.080 during the Omnium event at the World Track Championships back in March and he duly repeated the dose, with a time of 1.03.764, another good effort on a night when the track looked to be running slow.

Steven Burke - endurance rider or sprinter?

Craig MacLean looked short of racing, producing a time of 1.04.818. Of the young riders who have made such an impact at Junior and Under-23 level in recent years, David Daniell got closest to Burke's time with 1.03.928.

Crampton really had to hurt himself to beat Burke

And so it was left to Matt Crampton to claim the title which, on paper, he should have won with ease. At the worlds he just missed out on a medal with 1:01.822 but this time he looked to be struggling and although he held on to win in 1.03.103, the effort told on him and it was a good 20 minutes after he'd climbed off his bike before he was in a fit state to pick up his medal. Burke finished with the silver and Daniell with the bronze.
