REVOLUTION 17 REPORT
Nights drawing in, a chill in the air and a packed velodrome stoked with anticipation -- it can only be the return of the Revolution! The first event for the 2007-08 series (number 17) event kicked off with a intro sequence which underlined the international flavour of the event and its continued capacity to draw in the big names. As the line-up was introduced, including riders from the USA, Italy, Great Britain and Spain, the biggest round of applause rang out for the homegrown talents of Mark Cavendish and Geraint Thomas, who've both had awesome seasons this year on the road as first year professionals.
As ever, Revolution was graced by the glamour from the presentation ladies Helen (left) and Paula from Premier Promotional People and Models.
Elite Men Motor Paced Scratch Race 7km
The opening event gets under way.
The racing got underway with an event that evoked the good old days of motor paced racing. Liquigas road pro Francesco Chicci, in his first competitive track event, looked a little jumpy behind the Derny as the riders got underway. Like a Keirin multiplied by a factor of six, the bunch gradually wound up the speed behind the droning pacing bike.
A bit of Keirin style argy bargy was going on as the Derny prepared to peel off. Tony Gibb shoulder barged the giant Magnus Backstedt from the lead position behind the Derny before attacking off the front as it swung off. But Gibb was quickly reeled in. Backstedt took the front then swung up. As the even reached it's climax, Cavendish looked fairly innocuous about ten bikes back then came over the top at the bell. Coming up to the line, Cav and Geriant Thomas were neck and neck, with Cav taking the honours in the first event to rapturous applause.

... but Mark Cavendish, king of the sprints on the road, shows he can still sprint a bit on the track too.

DHL Future Stars Points Race - Boys 5km
Next came what is becoming a real showcase of tomorrow's talent. Tactics and fitness are needed in equal measure in the points and the youngsters had it in spadefuls. At the first sprint was taken from the front by Dibben of the SW region. A crash took out two riders on the corner which neutralised the race before sprint two taken by Dan Maclay of the East Mids region.
After sprint two, Maclay, Dibben and Harrison shared the lead with five points apiece. Sprint 3 was contested by a breakaway group of 6 riders. Another quartet got away following the sprint, that was taken by Rhys Hatcham of the West Mids Region, joining the 5 point club. Maclay took the initiative and made a lone break to take the final sprint and first blood in a what was to become a hotly contested Future Stars contest.

Revolution Sprint - Round 1 (Winners to Final)
The first heat of Round 1 of the sprint was a wall of muscle, with Maclean, Staff and Junior Sprint champion Peter Mitchell lining up. Mitchell was allowed to get a few yards on the senior riders, who eyed each other suspiciously. At the bell, Maclean and Staff unloaded and engulfed the junior, with Maclean taking the victory.

Next up was Jason Kenny up against fellow Brit Steven Hill and Spanish sprinter Itmar Esteban. At the bell Kenny took the front and opened a gap of around 6 bike lengths, taking an easy win in the process.

3 Steven Hill
Next up was a mixture of youth and experience, with Christian Lyte up against old stagers Marco Librizzi and Jose Escuredo. Librizzi kicked early and nearly threw himself off the bike. Lyte saw it coming and gave it everything to come over the top of Librizzi, with the Spaniard making a late charge into second.

3 Marco Librizzi
Next heat saw American Blatchford took his heat comfortably against Hargreaves and Daniell, rounding up the first round sprint matches.
Elite Women 1 Mile Dash
It was great to see the resurgence of Imperial measurements in track racing with the Women's 1 mile dash. Coldclough audaciously attacked at four laps to go provoking a reaction from the peleton. Cullen attacked and ate Coldclough for breakfast. Becki James then rose to the occasion and usurped them both to take a fine victory.

DHL Future Stars 5K Scratch Race - Girls 5km
The start of the race was a cagey affair until three riders went clear (Calvert leading) things quickly regrouped and the cat and mouse resumed, playing into the hands of the sprinters. Jess Booth took the first strike for home and no-one seemed to have an answer with 3 laps to go. However, Booth tired in the face of a strung out main field who caught her with one to go. Corrine Hall took the front of the bunch and narrowly pipped Fearnehough for the win.

Revolution Sprint Semi Finals (Winners to Final)
Craig Maclean and Christian Lyte faced off in the first of the semis. The crowd was treated to a masterclass of tactics from the pair in the opening two laps. At the bell Maclean took it from the front and easily beat the young Lyte despite carrying a muscular injury picked up in the gym.

2 Christian Lyte
It was a transatlantic challenge in the next heat, with Jason Kenny taking on Michael Blatchford. Kenny took a close victory after a few scary flicks of the bike by Blatchford in the buildup.
Elite Men 10km Points Race
The endurance guys were back on the track after a thriller in the opening event. In the mix were Chris Newton fresh from his National Championships win.
Sprint 1 was taken by Magnier of Brooks cycles after a thunderous leadout by Backstedt. Newton attacked straight after the sprint taking advantage of tired legs and tested the form of the peleton. Six went clear including Cavendish, Newton and USA rider Colby Pierce, well placed in the overall standings. Newton's initial attack blew the field to bits.
The breakaway group swelled to seven and promptly gained a lap putting Pierce in the lead with the last sprint to contest. Newton raised the tempo but at the bell Clancy and Pierce got ahead with Clancy taking the final sprint, followed by Pierce, who took the overall win.
It was a good night for the good old US of A with a number of victories to make the trip over the water well worthwhile.

DHL Future Stars 1 Mile Dash - Boys
The one mile dash lived up to its name straight away with an early dash by George Atkins of the East Mids region, lining the field out followed out by Dan Maclay, victor in the first Future Stars event. But neither rider was a match for USA rider Kit Carzon who came over the top to take the win.

DHL Future Stars racing was as always fast and close...
Elite Women 8km Scratch Race
After an early break by Lucy Martin and Jess Allen the peloton reformed. Cullen was next to attack but was quickly caught. Lizzie Armitstead took them all by surprise and went over the top and opened a huge lead, provoking a strong reaction from the field, spearheaded by Hannah Mayo. The group reformed then USA rider King and homegrown Alex Greenfield broke away and were joined by Katie Cullen and Laura Trott.
However the quartet failed to capitalise on the situation and were caught with ten laps to go. At five to go it was place-your-bets time with the remaining riders eyeing each other up. King showed her hand first and led at the bell. However she tired as Greenfield, Armitstead and Co. came through to take on the sprint, with Greenfield emerging to take the victory.

Revolution Sprint - Losers 1 Mile Dash
Losers in the sprint competition were given the opportunity to thrash out a little more lactic acid with the 1 mile dash. Hargreaves took on the sprint at two to go. A rider lost a pedal in the final dash, which was taken by Steven Hill, fighting off class opposition including Jose Escuredo and Jamie Staff.

Revolution Sprint - Final
Jason Kenny and Craig Maclean faced off in the final. Kenny led out with Maclean sitting well off his wheel. Kenny kept Maclean pinned at the top and watched every move. At the bell, the younger rider kicked at exactly the right time and despite a huge effort by Maclean, Kenny took a fine scalp and well deserved overall victory in the sprint competition.

DHL Future Stars 1 Mile Dash Girls
Back to the future stars and a near-perfect team performance from the North West region until the last few centimetres where Fearnehough spoilt the party in a photo finish, with NW region's Jo Wilman narrowly pushed into second.

1km Madison Time Trial (Mixed Handicap)
Always a crowd favourite, with mixed pairs facing off in a handicap competition, levelling the playing field and allowing a head to head competition between the guys and girls. Highlight was the intriguing pairing of sprinter Staff and endurance legend Rob Hayles. Despite an amusing missed hand sling they still produced a storming time. However the best was left for last with crowd pleasers Clancy and Cavendish tore up the track and roused the crowd with a fine victory.

Revolution Keirin
The smell of two stoke oil and a familiar drone signalled the Keirin competition. After an initial poke by Hargreaves, it was an all rainbow jersey affair with Daniell edging his team mate Lyte to the win. A true showcase of up and coming talent.

DHL Future Stars Points Race - Girls 5km
With a sprint every five laps it was always going to be a lung buster, with very little recovery time for the Future Stars riders. Coming into the penultimate sprint, three riders shared 5 points. Trott and Fearnehough capitalised and faced off for the final sprint. Trott pulled out all the stops to win the final sprint, with Fearnehough third, giving Trott the win in the points race and also the lead in the overall omnium competition.
Revolution Invitation Keirin
The Derny was cranked up once more for the invitation Keirin with an international line up of Scots, Spaniards, an American and a brace of Brits. Staff and Blatchford with history behind them were eagerly watched by the crowd. Staff looked like he didn't have the legs after a quiet night, but powered past Kenny who was on an early charge to take a much appreciated victory.
DHL Future Stars 5K Scratch Race - Boys
The 20 lapper got off to a flying start with no hint of an easy early pace. At the halfway mark the attacks started with the first one to stick from Tom Walker (SW region). Things bunched back together with 5 to go. Dan Maclay was once again in the fray leading an attack of 4 riders. The 4 were caught but Maclay managed to resist getting eaten up by the bunch and took the win, tightening his hold on the overall omnium standings.
Elite Women 8km Points Race
Lizzie Armitstead had a good showing up in the previous women's events and took first points in the elite women's event after a canny bit of riding to get her into second at the whistle. American King took a lone lead and max points in the next sprint.
Armitstead, who was quiet in the 2nd sprint, hit the front and split the group. Armitstead made her move and took the next sprint and edged ahead of Cullen in the overall standings, at 10 versus 8 with one sprint to go. King was at 7 points and still in with a shout. Colclough broke away and still lead at the bell. However, Armitstead did enough, taking 3rd in the final sprint, and the overall win.

Elite Men 15km Scratch
The endurance guys were back on the track for their final chance to impress the crowds of Revolution 17 and set a blistering early pace. Newton and Thomas went clear first upping the pace to around breakneck levels. The biggest question was how they were going to keep it up for another 40-odd laps. A quartet of O'Loughlin, Newton, Backstedt and Friedman broke away, riding like a team pursuit squad.
The awesome foursome gained a lap on the field. Next to go were Clancy and two others, stringing out the field. At 3 to go, all lapped riders were asked to leave the track ahead of a showdown for the breakaway quartet. Newton looked assured from the outset and took a fine victory. Backstedt stole his limelight by stripping off his Swedish champs jersey and throwing it into the crowd. While Liquigas' Chicci did a similar kit giveaway at the rail.
Chris Newton salutes the crowd as he wins the Scratch race.
Revolution 2-Up Team Sprint
All too soon, the final event came. And it proved to be a thrilling climax to yet another slick Revolution event. Mitchell and Librizzi pipped Lyte and Daniell in the first heat, posting a time of 32.770.
Next up was Maclean and Kenny, taking on the transatlantic combo of Blatchford and Hill. Kenny and Maclean were always going to be a tough proposition and, true to form, upped the ante with a 31.719.
The awesome paring of Queally and Staff were up last against the Spanish pairing of Escuredo and Esteban. The Science in Sport riders left nothing to chance and thundered around the two laps in 31.583 to take victory in the final event. Staff's opening lap was a scorcher and was followed up by an equally fine second lap from Queally, who, 7 years after his gold medal in Sydney, proved that he was still an athlete to be reckoned with.
