From Monday, the 21st May of until the 1st of August 2007, the heart of the Manchester Velodrome  is being ripped out and a new one put in its place as the boards from the track are replaced in time for the 2008 World Track Championships. The final event on the old boards which have seen some magnificent deeds accomplished on them over the years since it was built in 1994 was held today, Sunday May 20 with the running of the CDNW Youth Track Meeting.

The Ron Webb designed track has certainly had its share of glory over the years and much of it by British riders. On June 17th 1995, Britain’s Yvonne McGregor broke the women’s world hour and then shortly after at the 1996 World Track Cycling Championships, more world records were broken and then broken again. The most famous of these was for the 4,000 metres Individual Pursuit by local hero Chris Boardman who astounded the cycling world, riding to the title of World Champion in a time of 4min 11.114 seconds.

Then nine days later, on September 6th, he set a new world Hour record riding solo on the track for an hour, covering 56.375 kilometres. In 2000, the UCI re-defined the rules for the hour record, and on Friday 27th October 2000, during the World Championships in Manchester, Chris Boardman put on a show of determination to break the record held by the great Eddy Merckx of Belgium and set the new record of 49.441 km.

Ouch -- this is going to hurt! One of a few crashes in the latter part of the day's racing.

Records have continued to be beaten right up until the VISA Paralympic World Cup only a few weeks ago and how fitting it was that the final meeting on the track, organised ably by one of the countries youngest organisers in Matt Winston, saw the best Under 16 riders  from the North West region competing.

Competing in a range of events riders from Under 10 upwards, there was a lot of great racing from the riders who had come from as far afield as Scotland and the Isle of Man. In many of the bunch races, the racing was flat out from start to finish and was a reminder that without looking at the age of the competitors, you’d swear you’re listening to the hum of the tyres on the boards of a senior race being run off at pace.

And how great it was to see the big group of girls racing in the under14/16 bunch races where Under 16 rider Joanne Wilman (Yasumitsu-Schlapp) held of the determined challenge of fellow Under 16s Katie Fearnehough (Sportcity Velo) and Gabriella Shaw (Team Chevin Cycles).

There were some crashes in the latter bunch races as fatigue set in and mistakes were made but everyone seemed to get up and walk away from them which shows the determination of the young riders.

There were large groups of riders in the boys and girls race. Right: Jordon Hargreaves was in great form, lapping the field in the Points race.

NOTE: There will be many more photos from this event tomorrow.
