Tandem Championships
Warm weather and clear skies were the order of the day following many hours of prayers by the Organiser Paul Barber and the NTCA Helpers. The promised showers held off and Tandems took to the track. It was clear from the start of the event that it was going to be a major battle all the way to the Gold Medals and National Championship Jerseys.
The first ride of the time trial round produced the fastest time of the day by the pairing of Anthony Gill & Simon Churton of the Yasumitsu Schlapp with 10.936sec for 200m. This was then followed with a 10.965sec from Jonathan Norfolk and Anthony Kappes also of the Yasumitsu Schlapp. The pairing of Ben Elliott (VC St. Raphael) and John Saysell (PCA Ciclos Uno) managed an 11.110sec to gain the third seed position ahead of Peter Boyd (VC St. Raphael) and Ivor Reid (Clachnacuddin CC) with 11.621sec whilst the other pairing from Yasumitsu Schlapp, Stephen Cwiklinski and Gwyn Carless, produced an 11.808 for their 200m time trial.
Due to fact that there were no more than five tandem pairings riding, only the Gold Medals and National Championship Jerseys were to be presented at the conclusion of the competition. Also due to the limit of only two tandems on the track at any time this gave the BC Commissaire Martin Bridgwood the difficult task of drawing one of the teams out of the hat for a bye into the Semi Final, this fell to the lucky pairing of Cwiklinski & Carless of Yasumitsu Schlapp.
This meant the first round draw would be between the fastest four pairings. First up were Norfolk/Kappes and Elliottt/Saysell. Norfolk & Kappes won the heat with a 200m time of 11.337sec. It was a close run race over the last 100m with the winners just taking it on the line. This meant that Elliott and Saysell would have to win the rep to get back into the Semi Final.
In the second heat of the first round the pairing of Gill and Churton took the initiative and lead all the way to the finish to beat Boyd & Reid with a 200m time of 11.383sec.
In the first round repacharge, Ben Elliott & John Saysell went from the front with 300m to go easing up with 75m to go as they felt they’d taken with a tactical move as the others were 25m behind. Elliott & Saysell celebrated all the way to the line. But unbeknown to them, whilst in full flight and with over 200m to go Peter Boyd VC St. Raphael raised his arm to indicate that his tandem had a problem. After deliberation, a rerun was awarded and with a new front wheel inserted the two pairings took to the track once more. The sprint for the finish was run with similar tactics to that of the first encounter with Ben Elliott & John Saysell VC St. Raphael & PCA Ciclos Uno winning by two bike lengths.
With the Yasumitsu Schlapp pairing of Stephen Cwiklinski and Gwyn Carless coming through with a bye to the Semi-Finals this meant that they’d have the fresher legs in their heat against Anthony Gill & Simon Churton. However, this theory would not pay dividends on this occasion as Gill & Churton stormed past them in the first heat of best of three and simply pulled away from them in the second heat. This meant that Anthony Gill & Simon Churton Yasumitsu Schlapp were through to the final.
The pairings of Jonathan Norfolk and Anthony Kappes now faced Ben Elliott & John Saysell in their Semi-Final Matches. It was a close run tussle all the way with tactics playing a big part in each time the pairings meant. The first Match was taken by the Yasumitsu Schlapp pair but the determination and strength of Ben Elliott & John Saysell came through to take the next two Matches.
The third place Matches were taken by Jonathan Norfolk and Anthony Kappes in two clean rides from Stephen Cwiklinski and Gwyn Carless. In both Matches of the Final, Anthony Gill & Simon Churton Yasumitsu Schlapp showed why they deserved the Gold Medals and National Championship Jerseys with their strength and tactics to come from behind to beat Ben Elliott & John Saysell VC St. Raphael & PCA Ciclos Uno.
Quotes
Anthony Gill and Simon Churton: “It was a good victory as we have only ridden four times on the tandem, but we have been training hard all winter and its now paying dividends. We used our combined experience and youth to get us through.”
Ben Elliott: “I’m a bit disappointed, but it’s the first time John Saysell and I have ridden competitively together and we had a really tough ride through the rounds”
Youth Omnium
The youth races provided some excellent racing and showed the strength in depth and excellent track skills that our stars of the future are developing. Luc Jones looked like he had the Under 16 boys Omnium in the bag, however and unfortunate puncture in the scratch races robbed him of overall victory, despite wins in 3 out of the 4 events. This mishap enabled local rider Kian Emadi Tunstall Wheelers to take the top spot.
In the girls Under 16 Omnium, Jessica Booth of Halesowen A&CC dominated the racing with wins in 3 of the events and 2nd place in the keiren to take overall victory.
Robert Lampton of Newport Salop CC took overall honours over four events in the Under 14 boys omnium with a great display of riding from Joshua Papworth of Halesowen A&CC. Whilst Lucy Garner of Leicester RC won all 4 events in her category to win the Under 14 Girls omnium.
