British cycling’s outdoor track season opened with the traditional Good Friday Track Meeting at South London’s Herne Hill Stadium. The event was blessed with glorious sun shine and nearly 3,500 spectators lined the outside of the safety fence around the track. The competition, like the temperature, got hotter as the afternoon went on. The event at Herne Hill was first promoted in 1903, and has always been exciting, with entertaining racing from the best of British Riders together with top class riders from abroad, and today was no exception.
The morning session opened with the qualifying time trials for the White Hope Sprint and the Invitation Sprint. The fastest time for the flying 200 metre Time Trial respectively in each sprint were set by Anthony Gill (Yasumitsu-Schlapp) in 11.523sec and British Cycling’s Sprint Consultant Jan Van Eidjen (Germany (Duedenhofen)) in 11.204sec. Following the 200 metre Time Trial’s were five opening heats of the “Adept” Handicap Sprint which would see the first two from each heat go straight through to the final.
The final of the “Adept” Handicap Sprint was the opening event of the afternoon session. David Daniels (Cleveland Wheelers) bike developed a mechanical failure and was forced withdraw after the gun. The remaining nine riders continued and it was clear with well over 200 metres to go that the strongest rider was Bruce Croall (City of Edinburgh RC) as he stormed away from his fellow competitors with a clear win. Anthony Gill (Yasumitsu-Schlapp) was second and Peter Mitchell (Team Terminator) came third.
The Ed Taylor Points Race was the next event to take to the track with a large field. Tony Gibb (Plowman Craven – Evans) took the initiative by breaking away almost immediately and took almost maximum points for the opening laps. He was caught by the bunch after attack and counter attack by World Pursuit Champion Bradley Wiggins (Cofidis) and the Plowman Craven – Evans Team.
The dominant team tactics of the Plowman Craven – Evans Riders proved to be too good for the other riders and helped secure the win for Tony Gibb (Plowman Craven – Evans) with 25 points. In second was Stefan Steinweg (Germany) with 19 points and with 10 points taking third place was James Taylor (Plowman Craven – Evans). Fourth place and also with 10 points was Bradley Wiggins (Cofidis).
Next to take to the track were the White Hope Sprinters. The heat winners were Anthony Gill (Yasumitsu - Schlapp), Tom Buck (Sport City Velo), Steven Hill (Brooks Cycles), Pete Mitchell (Team Terminator) and Michael Partridge (CC Cardiff). These winners went straight through to the final and second placed riders went through to the repechage.
Invitation Sprint
The Invitation Sprint followed with six heats of three riders. The winners of each heat were to proceed though to round two. Heat one saw the closest battle between Jan van Eijden (Germany (Duedenhofen)) and Jelger Bischop (Alcmaria Victrix Holland) taking it to a photo finish. Britain’s Christian Lyte (SportCity Velo) powered away from his fellow competitors to easily take his heat. Tomas Babek (Czech Republic) battled around the team tactics of the City of Edinburgh RC riders Bruce Croall and Anthony Stirratt.
Babek managed to take the lead only 100 metres from the finish line to win his way through to the next round. In heat four, Robin Thompson (CC Cardiff) stormed away leaving David Daniel (Cleveland Wheelers) and Lee Povey (Team Terminator) to sort out second and third.
The next heat saw Denis Spicka (Czech Republic) take the lead with 200 metres to go. His powerful attack left Josh Hargreaves (Sport City Velo) and Ynus Taylor (Alcmaria Victrix Holland) standing and struggling to make ground on him all the way to the finish line. The final heat was taken in simple powerful style by Jonathan Norfolk (Yasumitsu – Schlapp) from Italy’s Giovanni Alaia (K.M.Cycling Team) and the Dutch Rider Sebastian Baanders (Alcmaria Victrix).
Event 5 on the program saw Bradley Wiggins (Cofidis), Sean Yates (In Gear RT), Jason Allen (Plowman Craven – Evans) and Alex Dowsett (100% ME) take to the track for the 10 minute Pursuit. Bradley Wiggins took all the glory for the fifth time in little under six minutes from Alex Dowsett in second, Jason Allen in third and Sean Yates was fourth.
Event 6 saw Luc Jones (Nomads - Bush Health Care) book his place in the final of the White Hope Sprint in a battle from the start and all the way to the finish line. He perseverance forced Jame van der Lubt (Alcmaria Victrix Holland) and Dan Woolfenden (Yasumitsu – Schlapp) out of the competition altogether.
The next event on the program was the Catford CC Devil take the Hindmost over 16 laps which saw a large field take the start and a bunch finish that was won by Alex Aldham-Breary (PCA Ciclos Uno) from Daniel Rudd (Citihub) taking second and in third was Adam Gent (InGear Development Squad)
Event 8 saw the return to the Invitation Sprint and three heats of the first round repechage. The winners were David Daniel (Cleveland Wheelers), Marco Brossa (Italy) and Bruce Croall (City of Edinburgh RC)
The White Hope Sprint Final was contested by six riders in a closely contested race from start to finish. In the end it was Anthony Gill (Yasumitsu – Schlapp) who managed to just stay clear from the ultimate and final move at the 200 metre line. Luc Jones (Nomads - Bush Health Care) secured second whilst Tom Buck (Sport City Velo) kept it together and managed third place.
The Big Motors
The big motors returned to the track for the first time in two years following them being forcibly moth-balled in 2005. The smell of petrol was noticeable when they were wheeled out but this was quickly repaired and all the motors were able to be run.
A thrilling 50 lap race saw attack and counter attack from all of the International Field of Riders. Unfortunately Bryan Taylor was not able to keep up with the pace and succumbed to being lapped towards the end of the race. Timo Scholz (Germany (Liepzig)) and Pacer Peter Bauerlein (Germany) covered the distance in 23min 30.45sec to win the event from fellow Germans Florian Fernow pacer Karsten Podlesch and Dutchmen Tim van der Zanden pacer Sam Mooij who took third.
The first of the afternoons 4 lap dashes saw £100 go the winner Jason Allen (Plowman Craven – Evans). Later the second Dash prize of the £100 prize went to Pete Mitchell (Team Terminator).
The Elimination race was eventually won by Bradley Wiggins (Cofidis) but only after a 30 minute break following a five rider crash which saw two ambulances turn out to effect first aid. Fortunately, it was the only crash of the day.
The Invitation Sprint Final was next. Up on the track was Jan van Eijden (Germany (Duedenhofen)). He was on form throughout the sprint series and he again demonstrated his sheer power and obvious talent in the final to take the win and he showed why he was the World Sprint Champion in 2000. He was, put simply, awesome and it’s great to see him riding so well whilst being an obvious help to British Cycling as a Sprint Consultant.
Golden Wheel
The finale to the Good Friday Track Meeting was the Golden Wheel 20 kilometre Scratch event in which the Plowman Craven – Evans Team dominated, thwarting every attempt by Bradley Wiggins (Cofidis) to win. Towards the end of the race, five riders including Bradley Wiggins, Tony Gibb (Plowman Craven – Evans), Alex Dowsett (100% ME), Jason Allen (Plowman Craven – Evans) and Stefan Steinweg (Germany) stayed well clear of the main bunch by nearly ¾ of a lap.
They maintained this distance until the end of the race despite numerous attempts by riders in the bunch to close the gap. Bradley Wiggins chancing his luck broke clear to try and take the win but was soon caught by Jason Allen, Alex Dowsett and Tony Gibb crossing the finish line in that order.
