Tournant and MacLean - stars of the show!
The fourth series of Revolution events came to a close with a top evening of entertainment at Manchester on Saturday night. A near full house enjoyed a nicely balanced programme of events, with the highlights including some top entertainment from sprinters Craig MacLean and Arnaud Tournant and some equally classy endurance riding from Mark Cavendish and Ed Clancy in particular.
The evening also saw the conclusion of the Future Stars competitions and the prize presentations for the winners of some very closely contested racing which has been of a very high standard. There was also a well supported prize draw in aid of children's charity Zoe's Place, which raised over £2000.
Elite Devil-Scratch
Ed Clancy was on great form all night
All the big hitters made it through the devil elimination stage and went into the 12 lap scratch race which concluded the race. All eyes were on Mark Cavendish resplendent in the deep pink of the T-Mobile team. However, at the finish it was Ed Clancy who surged clear in the final lap in emphatic style to hold off Gibb and Hayles, with Cavendish finding himself boxed deciding to save his strength for later.

2. Rob Hayles Team KLR
3. Tony Gibb Plowman-Craven
Revolution Sprint - Round 1
The main stars were also in good form in the first round of the sprint, all going through comfortably. Matt Mandard blew Tim Veldt away with a sub eleven second final lap in their heat, coming round the outside and pulling clear as the line approached. Teun Mulder got rid of the two young Brits, Lyte and Hargreaves with a late burst on the final lap, after Lyte had tried to lead it out with a lap to go. Another sub eleven second lap gave Arnaud Tournant plenty to spare as he rode away from Dave Daniell and Peter Hill. Craig MacLean had to work hard to take his heat, holding off Frenchman D'Almeida on the line.
Heat 1 - Matt Mandard beat Tim Veldt
Heat 2 - Mulder beat Lyte & Hargreaves
Heat 3 - Tournant beat Daniell & Mitchell
Heat 4 - Maclean beat D'Almeida & Hill
Women's Omnium - 200m Time Trial
Anna Blyth is a rider on the up and her 11.606s time was a great start to the women's sprint Omnium. It took an 11.443 from Vicky Pendleton to knock Blyth off the top in the event.
1. Pendleton 11.443s
2. Blyth 11.606
3. Muche 11.992
4. Cueff 12.044
DHL Future Stars Boys - Points Race
The boys' large fields produced fast, competitive racing
Andy Fenn took the Future Stars Boys Points Race by winning the final sprint to add to the second place he took in the second sprint. It was a very open race with only a handful of riders scoring twice. Yorkshire's Vince Cartwright fell in the closing stages, but was unhurt.
Sprint 1: 1 Serruya, 2 Skubala, 3 Freemen, 4 King
Sprint 2: 1 Williams, 2 Fenn, 3 Jelfs, 4 Serruya

Sprint 2: 1 Allen, 2 Greenfield, 3 Monger, 4 Fearnehough

Revolution Sprint - Semi Finals
Arnaud Tournant beat fellow Frenchman Matt Mandard to claim his place in the sprint final, coming round his rival in the last lap to win by half a bike length. In the other semi, Craig MacLean showed some great bike skills in a track stand and stalled turn on the bank to force Mulder to the front, but it was his amazing speed which then took him round his rival for a very narrow win on the line.
Heat 1 Tournant beat Mandard
Heat 2 MacLean beat Mulder
Women's Omnium - Sprint Round 1
Anna Blyth took the considerable scalp of Keirin star, Christin Muche of Germany with a great last lap ride, surging clear and then fighting back when her rival looked likely to come round her in the closing few years. Vicky Pendleton then made light work of coming round France's Cueff to win her heat too.
Heat 1 Blyth beat Muche
Heat 2 Pendleton beat Cueff
Elite 10km Points Race 40 laps
Rob Hayles, a winner in the points race
Mark McNally slipped away from the pack with a lap to go to claim the first sprint after a rapid start to the race. Rob Hayles was second and the experienced rider, riding on the eve of his 34th birthday, went on to take the second sprint, stealing it on the line from Mark Cavendish, to establish a healthy three point lead. Ed Clancy then flew away in an impressive solo attack which gave him the third sprint. However, Hayles took second to wrap up the race as Clancy faded back into the field. The final sprint went to Cavendish who claimed second overall in the process.
Sprint 1: 1 McNally, 2 Hayles, 3 Cavendish, 4 Rowe
Sprint 2: 1 Hayles, 2 Cavendish, 3 Dowsett, 4 Manning
Sprint 3: 1 Clancy, 2 Hayles, 3 Dowsett, 4 R Lloyd

1. Rob Hayles 11 points
2. Mark Cavendish 10
3. Mark McNally 5
4. Ed Clancy 5
DHL Future Stars Girls - 5km Scratch
This race was destined to be decided in the last few yards and the last lap was indeed a thriller, with everything coming down to the final sprint where Alex Greenfield confirmed her overall victory in the series by claiming the sprint victory right on the line, from sprinter Jess Varnish. There was hardly a bike length covering the first four.
1. A Greenfield
2. Varnish
3. Monger
4. Allen
Women's Omnium - Sprint Round 2
Muche won the overseas heat, diving under her inexperienced rival and claiming the front with three quarters of a lap to go and holding off Cueff easily. The clash of Pendleton and Blyth promised to be a good guide as to how Blyth is progressing in her quest to join her rival at the top of the women's sprinting game, but on the evidence of this ride she still has some work to do, with the former world Sprint champion smoothly coming round her in the last lap to win by a bike length.
Heat 1 Muche beat Cueff
Heat 2 Pendleton beat Blyth
Revolution Sprint - Losers 1 Mile Dash
The Dutch bossed this one, with Tim Veldt winning and team-mate Teun Mulder helping him out as they took it in turns to set the agenda at the front. Mulder went clear with 3 laps to go forcing he others to chase, leaving Veldt to tag along and then counter-attack on the last lap as Mulder backed off. Good fun to watch!
1. Veldt
2. D'Almedia
3. Lyte
Revolution Sprint - Final
What a thriller this one was. These two are brilliant bike riders and they showed all their skills in the great race. Tournant almost caught Craig napping, diving under him as the Scot went into a track stand, MacLean shot after the rapidly disappearing Frenchman and the two of them rode the last half lap side by side, making contact and crossing the line locked together. A tense wait for a photo finish ended with MacLean getting the race. Smiles on both the riders' faces told the story of how much these entertainers enjoyed the clash.
DHL Future Stars Boys - 1 mile Dash
A typically frenetic mile dash went to Sam Freemen as the bunch thundered over the line in close formation. Toby Meadows had kept things interesting with a brave solo attack which lasted until a lap to go, but the pace of the field was irresistible.

2. Mike webb
3. Tom Weiskowski
Women's Omnium - Team Sprint 3 laps
This is an event we could be seeing a lot more of in the future and the GB pairing looked well-drilled as they won by a clear second.

Cueff & Muche 35.961s
1km Madison Time Trial
Tournant grins as he slings in Craig MacLean during their record-breaking kilo
This event has always been a favourite of Revolution crowds and it's seen some fine riding by a number of pairings. However, the event was taken to new heights on this occasion. The Dutch sprint pairing of Mulder and Veldt blew away the previous record, 57.547s held by Clancy and Cavendish, with a stunning 55.633. This record lasted less than five minutes, however, as the muscle-heavy paring of Arnaud Tournant and Craig MacLean responded to the huge noise made by the crowd banging the boards with a blistering 55.164.
The drama wasn't over even then as Clancy and Cavendish then attempted to win back their record and although they just failed, their time of 56.646 was almost a second inside their old record, a brilliant effort in the circumstances. The popular winning duo then enjoyed an extended lap of honour and the inevitable standing ovation and bouquet-throwing. It was undoubtedly the highlight of the evening.
1. Maclean & Tournant 55.164
2. Mulder & Veldt 55.633
3. Cavendish & Clancy 56.646
4. Gibb & Taylor 59.255
5. Blythe & Lloyd 1.00.827
DHL Future Stars Boys - 5km Scratch
An eventful race which had an array of attacking moves and doomed breaks - Mikey McMahon take bow - was won by the very classy looking Andy Fenn, from Sam Freeman and Tom Skubala in a sprint finish.
1. Andy Fenn
2. Sam Freemen
3. Tom Skubala
4. Chris Worral
Women's Omnium - Sprint Round 3
The final round of the Women's Sprinting saw easy wins for both the British riders, with Pendleton clearly relishing her victory over her old nemesis Muche. Pendleton also claimed the overall win the Omnium, with Blyth taking a deserved second.
Heat 1 Blyth beat Cueff
Heat 2 Pendleton beat Muche
Revolution Keirin
David Daniell wins the first Keirin
David Daniell had a bit too much speed and strength for the other riders in the support Keirin event, taking the lead in the last lap and holding off the rest with some ease.
1. Daniell
2. Hill
3. Hargreaves
Invitation Keirin
In the headline Keirin, the French used their strength in depth to block the rest of the riders and when Matt Mandard went off the front on the last lap no-one could respond and the French took a deserved one-two-three.
1. Mandard
2. D'Almeida
3. Tournant
DHL Future Stars Girls - 1 mile Dash
Ella Hopkins won a tight sprint finish to claim a tightly contested mile dash, with Jo Wilman claiming second from Lucy Martin. It concluded a great season of racing by the girls.
Elite 15km Scratch Race 60 laps
Cav' bossed and won the scratch race in classy style
Mark Cavendish, Ed Clancy and Alex Dowsett worked over the rest of the field in expert fashion to dominate the Scratch Race. A fast race from the start, it suddenly upped a couple of gears at around the half-way stage and group of eight riders broke free. Clancy, Cavendish, Dowsett and Paul Manning were instrumental in making this split work and they gradually whittled the rest of the riders in the group down until, when they finally gained a lap on the rest of the field, they had only Tom Murray for company. Murray did well to keep himself in the race and he even had a couple of digs in the closing stages, but it seemed pretty inevitable that Cavendish and Clancy would wrap things up and they duly did so, with Dowsett claiming an impressive third.

DHL Future Stars Presentation
The Future Stars competitions have again been a highlight of the season and DHL's Guy Elliott was on hand to dish out the prizes to Alex Greenfield and Andy Fenn, the individual winners and to the team winners, the West Midlands.
Team Sprint 3 laps
The French sprinters capped a great evening with a Team Sprint win
The final event of the evening and the season was a quality Team Sprint, with the French trio of Tournant, Mandard and D'Almeida (46.412s) just too quick for the scratch team of MacLean, Mulder and Veldt (47.385s).
