UCI World Masters Track Championships:

Day 4 - Wednesday 14 September 2006

Thursday 14th September saw the fourth day of the 2006 UCI World Masters Track Championships at the Manchester Velodrome. Great Britain today won two of the seven titles on offer with winning performances from Joel Stewart (Men's 30-34 Pursuit) and Janet Birkmyre (Women's 40+ Sprint). Janet makes it three Gold medals out of three so far this week, adding the Sprint to her earlier Points and Individual Time Trial titles.

Joanne Fenwick, from Warrington, set two new World Masters Best Times for the Women's 50+ age category in the Sprint, both in the qualification 200m time trial and in competition (subject to ratification).

At the end of the fourth day the top three Countries in the medal table are as follows:
- 1st: USA (11 Gold, 11 Silver and 5 Bronze),
- 2nd: Great Britain (11 Gold, 6 Silver and 15 Bronze),
- 3rd: Australia (6 Gold, 7 Silver and 4 Bronze).

The remaining World Masters titles were collected by Kenny Williams, USA (Men's 35-39 Pursuit), Gordon Singleton, Canada (Men's 50-54 Sprint), Patrick Gellineau, USA (Men's 55-59 Sprint), Keith Oliver, Australia (Men's 65-69 Points), Dennis Blunden, Australia (Men's 70+ Points).

Particular mention should go to Janet Birkmyre of Great Britain, who has made it three titles out of the three events so far in her age category (Points, Sprint and Individual Time Trial). Also to Kenny Williams of USA, who defended his title from 2005 in the Men's 35-39 Pursuit and set a new World Masters Best Time of 3.24.837, beating his existing record by seven hundredths of a second (set at this event in 2004). And finally to Joanne Fenwick of Great Britain, who set two new World Masters Best Times for the Women's 50+ age category during the Women's 40+ Sprint.

The championships continue until Saturday 16th September.
