Records Galore on Day 2 of Masters
UCI World Masters Track Championships:
Day 2 - Tuesday 12 September 2006
Tuesday 12th September saw the second day of the 2006 UCI World Masters Track Championships at the Manchester Velodrome. These are the official championships for riders over 30 years of age. Today saw the 2006 World Masters titles awarded in the Men's Sprint and Women's Individual Time Trials events. There were an amazing seven new World Masters Best Times set during today's competition - the previous record was broken (subject to ratification) in each of the five men's Sprint events.
Great Britain won three of the eight titles on offer with winning performances from Janet Birkmyre (Women's 40-49 Individual Time Trial), Joanne Fenwick (Women's 50+ Individual Time Trial) and Geoff Cooke (Men's 60-64 Sprint). Janet and Geoff both set new World Masters Best Times for their events during the competition.
At the end of the second day the top of the medal table is as follows:
- 1st: Great Britain (7 Gold, 3 Silver and 9 Bronze),
- 2nd: USA (6 Gold, 7 Silver and 3 Bronze),
- 3rd: Australia (2 Gold, 4 Silver and 3 Bronze).
The remaining World Masters titles were collected by Delroy Walters, USA (Men's 70+ Sprint), Earl Henry, Trinidad & Tobago (Men's 65-69 Sprint), Alphonso Whaley, USA (Men's 45-49 Sprint), Shigekazu Maruyama, Japan (Men's 40-44 Sprint), Elizabeth Reap, USA (Women's 30-39 Individual Time Trial).
Particular mention should go to Janet Birkmyre, Delroy Walters, Geoff Cooke, Alphonso Whaley and Shigekazu Maruyama who set new World Masters Best Times for their events during the competition. Also to Keith Oliver (Australia) and Emi Wachi (Japan) also set new World Masters Best Times despite not winning their events. And finally, to Geoff Cooke, Alphonso Whaley and Shigekazu Maruyama who successfully defended their titles from 2005. Joanne Fenwick won the 45-49 title last year and successfully moved up an age category this year.
