The glamour for the Podium presentations came from the sisters of two of the countries top Junior riders, Amanda Hampton and Lois Dowsett. The attractive duo presented the flowers and medals to the riders through out the week and British Cycling thanks them for their help during the championships.

 

Podium for the Junior Mens Kilo TT, Christian Lyte (2nd), Jason Kenny (1st) and David Daniell (3rd). All three won the Team Sprint World Title in Gent two weeks ago.

 

Report

The final day of the 2006 British Cycling Junior and Youth Track Championships at Newport (Wales) was again a very special day of racing with national records and near record performances from the future stars. There were many highlights but two of the best came in the Under 16 Time Trials. In the Women's, Rebecca James broke the National Record to win that narrowly from last years champion Jessica Varnish. The 15 year old winner is from Abergavenny and has only been racing the track for a year. A very bright prospect along with the established rider from the Midlands, Jessica Varnish.

In the Mens TT, endurance rider Andrew Fenn did what Steven Burke did last year in the Junior race and that was beat the sprinters at their own game. The Sprinters started the ball rolling by breaking the national record one by one until Fenn took to the track and had the final say, winning his third title and breaking his second national record of the week.

Andrew, who has been racing for eight years and cut his racing teeth in the track league run by Peter Waghorn at Welwyn Garden City, now looks to try and get on the Olympic Development Programme and take yet another step forward in his cycling career.

Of the other events, the riders just back from the World Championships dominated the Junior Time Trials with Jason Kenny winning his event and Anna Blyth hers with the other medal positions all filled by the World Championship riders. In the Under 14 Girls Omnium, Laura Trott continued her domination of the category by winning her Omnium, again, and in the boys Daniel McLay did likewise. Jordan Hargreaves however, brother of Olympic Development rider Joshu Hargreaves, made Daniel work hard for it and was a worthy silver medallist.

Overall it was a great week of racing with so many highlights all the riders should rightly feel proud of themselves for racing hard and showing that the country has yet many more up and coming champions to add to those we saw do us proud in Athens and Gent recently. British Cycling would also like to thank everyone else who worked so hard during the week like the officials. It was noticeable there were many new young faces among the established set of officials which is great for the sport which needs such dedicated volunteers as much as it needs the riders.

Thanks also to Willi Tarran for not only organising it, but also supplying us the results each evening. The next big British Cycling National Championship track championship week will be the senior and disability championships in October at Manchester where many of the Juniors will return to battle for more medals.
