REPORTS

Two women dominated the sprint competition for Juniors, Lucy Ayres who was second and Anna Blyth. A future star in the sprint, Joanne Wilman rode up a category and was third.

Junior Women's Points Race -- Turning the tables on her GB teammate, Katie Curtis from Wales was the Gold medal winner after riding a tactically astute race to gather enough points to defeat last year's champion Lizzie Armitstead with Lara Wann in third.

Junior Mens Pursuit

20060818_JNationals_Day4_003

Steven Burke and Jonny Bellis both receive Gold medals whilst Peter Kennaugh picked up the bronze.

One of the most amazing races of the day was the pursuit. up until the final, it was straight forward man against watch and then in the minor finals, man against man. The riders for final set their stall out in the qualifying when Jonny Bellis was the fastest with Steven Burke not far
behind in 2nd and both were well up for the final.

In the bronze medal ride off was World Scratch race champion Peter Kennaugh who the day before was looking forward to the event and not being in the final was disappointing for the first year junior. Any frustration he had, was taken out on his opponent in the bronze medal ride off. Leading from the start, Peter and his opponent Alex Dowsett, were evenly matched and
whatever lead Kennaugh had, Dowsett was never far behind. The Isle of Man rider only clinched it in the closing laps when he started to pull away from his Glendene teammate and won his second medal of the championships.

Then came the final and to start with, Bellis started to open up a gap on Burke but as the riders entered the final k, the lead for Bellis started to come down and on the final lap, a storming sprint by Burke, saw him wipe out the deficit and finish with the same time as Bellis. Out came he rule books but in the spirit of a Junior Championship, both riders were awarded the title as they had certainly earned it.

Under 16 Mens Sprint
Day 4 saw the conclusion of this competition with the semi finals and then the finals. With the riders at this stage of the competition very closely matched, it was not only the fastest but smartest sprinter that would triumph.

Showing a lot of track craft for riders so young, something that will help those who progress onto the Olympic Development Academy, the riders contested their finals with a great determination. First up the ride off for bronze between England's Tom Buck and Welsh rider Luc Jones. There was never much between them but Tom had the edge on Luc in both rides and took the bronze in straight rides.

In the Gold medal final, Steven Hill who has shown a lot of potential leading up to the championships, went on the attack in the final but Mitchell was equal to the task and in both rides fended off the Books Cycles rider to take the Gold.

Footnote: During the final of the Under 16 Women's Scratch race there was a crash which saw a number of riders crash. At least one, Helen Scott, was reported to have broken her collarbone and we send her and the other riders, our best wishes for a speedy recovery.
