Lookout London 2012
Matt Rowe, (2nd), Adam Blythe (1st) and Jonny Bellis (3rd) in the final event of the day, the Men's Scratch race for Juniors.
After three days of competition, there is no doubt that the bar has been raised in what it takes for young riders to win National Championships and that can only be good for the riders who are looking to represent their country in 2012 at the London Olympics.
One look around the track centre and not only is there many a keen parent helping their child to do their best, but there also are British Cycling talent team coaches giving advice whilst Great Britain Cycling Team coaches and managers, including the Performance Director Dave Brailsford, are looking on from the stands. Serious business indeed!
There were many highlights from the racing on day 3 and one of those included the win in the Men's Junior Scratch Race by Adam Blythe who found no-one had the speed to beat him to the line and he was a worthy winner. The race, which everyone in the track centre seemed to be saying was a great show piece, was a credit to the high level of ability shown in the junior ranks right now and a great proving ground for those who want to step up a level or two to the Worlds and European championships which are just as exciting races as the event is at senior level.
In the Scratch race today, a more a tactical event than the bruising all out encounters I witnessed at the Worlds, World Junior Scratch race champion, Peter Kennaugh, found the weight of the rainbow stripes heavy on his shoulders. The race had its moments including a lone break by eventual silver medallist Matt Rowe, but the best was certainly saved until the final few laps.
Mike Webb of Cardiff Ajax, took advantage of the close marking going in the bunch which had failed to split after 75 laps, and the Welshman took off and quickly had half a lap. Everyone was looking at someone else to chase and the one with the most eyes on him, was Peter Kennaugh, who had already closed the gap to a break quite a few times.
The Isle of Man rider took up the challenge to chase down Webb but unlike Gent (World Championships) where he was able to ride away from the rest of the field, this time his legs ran out of steam half a lap from the finish and he had to give best to those who were now heading for the line at full speed. Leading the way was Adam Blythe, who was being challenged by his Madison partner at the Worlds, Matt Rowe, but Blythe had the speed to see off that challenge and win the Junior title with Rowe second and Jonny Bellis in third.
There was also a super performance from Hannah Mayho in the Under 16 Women's Pursuit where the Raleigh EVR rider went within a second of Nicole Cooke's national record for the 2,000 metres, a time her coaches said she has beaten in training. Hannah wasn't unable to beat it in competition but did enough to win gold from another fine performer, Dani King. Bronze went to Greta Junker from Raleigh EVR.
The other medals for the day went to the Under 12 riders in the Omnium, an event dominated by Jonathan Dibben who won all the counting races to win the Gold unchallenged with Alex Minting winning the Silver and bronze going to Chris Latham who won that on a count back from Alex Minting.
There were also two other races that began today, the Under 16 Men's Sprint and the Junior Women's Sprint. The riders in the Under 16 Men's sprint were certainly putting a show on around the boards as the work they have done with Talent Team Coach Geoff Cooke showed as they rode each other up and down the track trying to get through to the next round. The semi finals tomorrow certainly look like being great races and after the success in Gent by the sprinters, there appears to be more talented riders coming along!
The Junior Women's Sprint was perhaps not quite as exciting as the men's sprint event, with World Championship Junior Women's Silver medallist from the Sprint and World Junior Women's Keirin champion, Anna Blyth finding no-one with the ability to get near her whilst Lucy Ayres was also finding it easy going en-route to the semi finals. These two are expected to meet in the final tomorrow although anything could happen!
