Event Press Release
Circuit Race Kicks off Tour of Britain in London
Over 80 entries have already been received for Sunday’s London Grand Prix, the penultimate round of the Elite Men’s Circuit Race Series. Two strong eight rider line-ups from Rapha Condor–Recycling.co.uk and Pearl Izumi/Planet X/High 5 dominate the entry list, with Rapha's Graham Briggs & Simon Holt and Pearl Izumi's Jeroen Janssen all still in with a chance of claiming the Elite Circuit Series crown.
Briggs (pictured right) and Holt lie second and third in the series, and with leader Dean Downing riding The Tour of Britain, it will be a chance for the two youngsters to overtake their team leader at the top of the standings.
A number of other top names who will be appearing, among them is Liam Holohan, fresh from his runner up spot in the Salford Nocturne last weekend and Sport Beans’ Marcin Bialoblocki, who has been in good form in the Premier Calendar this year.
Other favourites include former winner Ian Holt, Warwick Spence, Will Bjergfelt who rode so well at the Tour of Pendle, Daniel Patten, and top Junior George Atkins.
Racing gets underway at 10.30, with a limited number of entries available on the line for the event, which takes place over 55 minutes and 5 laps on the Westminster Circuit.
Memory Lane for the London GP
As stages go, there are few bigger, if any, for British riders than a race at the Tour of Britain. Big crowds out of the main race are on hand to see some high speed crit action and the riders never fail to dissapoint. More of the same is expected this year.
2004 and a young Mark Cavendish, bloodied from a crash the day before, wins the London GP. He went on to win stages and lead the Tour of Britain before this year becoming a global cycling star after six Grand Tour stage wins in the one season.
2005: Ian Holt wins the race with James Taylor and Tony Gibb not far away.
2006: Malcolm Elliott wins on the Mall outside Buckingham Palace. The veteran professional rides the Tour of Britain this year.
2007: Winner again last year at Crystal Palace was Malcolm Elliott from Andy Tinsley who rides again this year.
