The finale of the British Cycling Premier Calendar elite road race series is scheduled to take place at Richmond on Sunday 21st September. The event will see up to 120 of the UK’s top riders tackling a spectacular new 83 mile course, starting and finishing at 11.30 and around 15.30 respectively in Richmond Market Place.
The route of the Richmond Meet Grand Prix takes in a 53 mile loop up Swaledale, featuring the climb of the Butter Tubs pass, returning down Wensleydale to complete three 10 mile laps of the Waitwith circuit. The inaugural event, held last year on Spring Bank Holiday Sunday as part of the recently revived Richmond Cyclists’ Meet and won by this year’s Premier Calendar leader Russ Downing, was a great success despite atrocious weather conditions.
The move to a September date with quieter roads has enabled the organisers, Richmond Cycling Club, to use an extended route and they are also hoping for an improvement on the 7 degrees, strong wind, rain and hail of 2007 – as are the riders! Proven logistics have also enabled an increase in the maximum field size from 100 to 120 and, although the closing date has nominally passed, there are a limited number of places available for late entrants – contact the organiser, Geoff Lloyd, to secure a place: Details here
During the race, there will be a number of stands on display in the Market Place and the British Cycling Go-Ride team will be on hand to organise skill based cycling events for the youth categories.
