British Cycling National Road Race Championships

British Cycling’s National Road Race Championships return to North Yorkshire on the weekend of the 28 – 29th June and both defending champions, David Millar and Nicole Cooke, are on the start sheet. Once again the venue will be Duncombe Park, Helmsley the magnificent historic home of Lord and Lady Feversham where the Championships were last held in 2005 and the scene for Russell Downings great victory.

Since then, the venue has been host each year to the Ryedale Grand Prix, a single day race held as part of British Cycling’s Premier Calendar Series. The rolling roads around the Howardian Hills and through Ryedale offer some of the very best terrain for racing of this type. The course encourages aggressive riding and each year the action has begun immediately the race has left Helmsley. It certainly makes for a spectacular site as the riders and the convoy cavalcade make their way through picture postcard villages. A must for any cycling photographer.

The course is more or less the same as 2005 and is based upon two circuits; Circuit One is a loop of just over 18 km that passes through Terrington returning to Hovingham from where the second 21 km, more Northerly loop begins that in turn passes through Gilling and back to Hovingham.

The Men's British Road Race Championship

Russell Downing wins the Men's Championship in 2005 at Ryedale

For the Men’s Championships the number of laps for each loop has been switched around making 5 laps for the first circuit; to give spectators more time on the village green in Hovingham where a great atmosphere developed in 2005. In Olympic Year, the National Championships is usually a particular focus for riders and newsmen alike as last minute selections are being chased. Times have changed in recent years however and routes for British Cycling’s Olympians follow a more certain pathway these days. That said, there are still likely to be a few riders looking to confirm the hoped for Olympian Status. On this Olympic theme, the race will incorporate the Peter Longbottom Memorial, the Malton based Olympian who was tragically killed some years ago on the nearby A64.

Missing the event will be the GB Track Endurance squad including Bradley Wiggins; they will instead be commencing a track training block as part of their intensive build up for Beijing. The race isn’t however without its share of top names and returning to ride will be some key continental stars. Hopefully defending his title will be David Millar who, if can align his travel plans, will head out immediately afterwards to reconnoitre the time trial course for the Tour de France. Twice Champion Roger Hammond will be hoping for more freedom in the race than he found as a marked man when defending his title on this course in 2005.

Perhaps the biggest interest lays in the entry of Mark Cavendish, a rare talent on both road and track. The World Madison Champion from earlier this year (he also won the title in 2005) has electrified road racing on the continent and is now widely regarded as the World’s fastest sprint finisher. Case proved when he recently romped home to two stage wins in the Tour of Italy. His entry could prove to be a tactical headache for the home teams. In the past, the returning Continental Pros have occasionally complained of negative tactics by home pros, denying them the opportunity to breakaway. Here however is a Continental rider who would now doubt welcome tactics like that.

With the domestic racing scene being dominated by the Downing brother Russell and Dean, it’s going to be interesting to see how they approach the race. The Champion on this course in 2005, Russell has the repertoire to win in any fashion and he’ll no doubt be encouraged by the long uphill finishing straight that can take the edge off the pure speed merchant’s finish. Certainly when asked for his thoughts recently the response was typically frank, he wants the title back and has continued to race and train in spite of a cast on his wrist following a recent fall racing in Norway.

Brother Dean will be hoping for more luck on this course than he has experienced todate. He was a non-finisher here in last years Ryedale Grand Prix when a combination of mechanical failures and a collision with a team car ruined his day. A win recently in the Yorkshire Regional Championships on neighbouring roads may just however give him the confidence that his luck is about to turn.

The event will incorporate for the first time the Under 23 Championship and this offers an interesting side show with 60 of the 157 riders falling into this category.

Women's British Road Race Championship

20050625_Womens_Champs_Podium

The podium in front of Duncombe Park manor house returns to the same place to fight out the 2008 title -- Emma Davies-Jones, Nicole Cooke and Rachel Heal.

The Women’s title race opens the show on the Saturday and could be the most open race for years. The dominance of Nicole Cooke could this year be under threat from Halfords Bikehut team mate Sharon Laws and Swiss based Emma Pooley who rides for Specialized. Both have risen to prominence in international races this year and have the climbing talents to tackle this rolling course.

Indeed, it was this event here in 2005 that first saw Pooley; a then “unknown” hit the headlines with a storming ride in the leading group. Another member of that group back in 2005 was Rachel Heal, now based in the States, she returns for another tilt at the title and will no doubt be in the final shake up. Again the Under 23 riders will be joining in the action with the favourites there seeming to come from the strong Halford’s Bikehut team of Nicole Cooke.

The promotion of the event will again be a joint venture between British Cycling’s Yorkshire Region and Peter Longbottom’s old club VC York who handle the demanding marshalling role alongside other local clubs.

Yorkshire Festival

The event is a key part of the Yorkshire Festival of Cycling that now has a season long format of National Championships and Premier Events held throughout the County. The Festival is entirely run by volunteers with proceeds going towards the development of the Region’s ambitious Youth Programme, including the White Rose Youth League that offers racing and coaching for Under 16 year olds.

The event again enjoys the support of both the Ryedale District and North Yorkshire County Councils. It will also feature sponsorship from Wakefield Based Grass Concrete Limited via their Grasscrete brand.

The Women’s Championship starts from Duncombe Park at 2.45pm on Saturday and is expected to finish at 5.50pm The Men’s race on Sunday starts at 10.00am on Sunday and the long slog is scheduled to end at 3.15pm.
