Sponsored by Northern Rock as part of its ongoing sports and community investment programme, the Cyclone offers opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to compete in this highly popular event, which attracted approximately 1,000 cyclists for its inaugural 2007 festival. This year organisers have already seen a dramatic increase in entrants including confirmed participation from Great Britain's Rob Hayles (Team Halfords Bikehut) Malcolm Elliott & Russ Downing (Pinarello RT), Tony Gibb & James McCallum (Plowman Craven RT), Dean Downing (Rapha Condor Recycling RT) meaning the public will get the chance to see some of cycling's finest competitors.

Cyclone participant, Rob Hayles, said: "The Northern Rock Cyclone is a great opportunity for participants to have fun, keep fit and see some of the country's leading sports people in action. Cycling offers many health benefits - whilst also encouraging people to do their bit for the environment by ditching the car every once in a while and getting on their bikes. I'm looking forward to taking part - after falling during an event last year I went to Halfords last week and they gave me a great deal on a pair of stabilisers which I'll have strapped on tightly!"

Showcasing some of the North East's most dramatic landscapes and landmarks, the Cyclone kick-starts on Friday 13th June from 6pm in Leazes Park, Newcastle - against the backdrop of Newcastle United's famous St James' Park football ground. This dynamic evening of racing incorporates a series of youth rides, the 'Go-Race' for novices and the elite one-hour race which will see past and present World and Olympic Medallists competing.

The festival continues on Saturday with the 'Cyclone Challenge' - a competition with three ability categories ensuring there is something for everyone - from families and beginners to experienced riders of peak fitness levels. The rides start from Newcastle Falcons Rugby ground, Kingston Park, between 8.30am - 10.00am and will continue through Northumberland until approximately 6.30pm. The rides will allow participants to take in the county's beautiful scenery offering people the chance to stop and experience some of Northumberland's local fare along the way.

The festival culminates with the 'Beaumont Trophy' on Sunday. Established for 57 years, this renowned trophy has been won by many famous riders including Malcolm Elliott - Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist and UK International competitor, as well as Russ Downing of the Pinarello Team who is currently leading the Premier calendar. There will be a battle royal between the Pinarello Team and the Rapha Condor Recycling Team as Dean Downing, Russ's brother will be out to take over the lead in the competition. The Beaumont Trophy is now classed as a Premier Calendar Event and will be one of ten events in 2008 that is used to select riders to represent Great Britain at international level.

Northern Rock's Director of Advertising, Brand & Sponsorship Dave Henderson explains why the organisation is keen to be involved: "Northern Rock is committed to supporting all kinds of sporting events and clubs, and our name is synonymous with English sport. The Cyclone represents a number of our aims in working with the North East community as it not only promotes health, charitable support in the region that we are immensely proud to be a part of, but it also provides excellent opportunity for everyone to get involved and take part."

Event Organiser and creator Peter Harrison, said: "It's a tremendous coup for the North East to be once again hosting this prestigious cycling festival. We are thrilled at this year's sporting and celebrity line-up, and, with participation from regional businesses and venues, the event offers plenty of attractions and activities for spectators as well as participants. We have already received over 1,700 entries for our 2008 event, and we're now looking forward to hosting the biggest and most spectacular Cyclone event to date."

The weekend starts on the Friday afternoon of the 13th with an inter schools competition which will be run by coaches from British Cycling.

This will be followed at 6pm by an exciting evening of Criterium racing in Leazes Park which is adjacent to Newcastle City Centre. The highlight of the evening will be an Elite race of one hour which has a £1000 first prize and a points competition with a prize fund of £650. The total prize fund for the night is £5000 At least 1000 spectators are guaranteed to cheer on all of the riders and give the whole evening a carnival atmosphere. The evening will be one of non stop action and there will be refreshment stands around the course adding to the atmosphere and ensuring that the spectators are suitably refreshed throughout the night's entertainment.

Saturday will be the day that the Elite riders relax whilst those who have entered for one of the three Sportive rides will enjoy the rural roads of Northumberland. Over 1230 riders have already entered these rides but entries are still being taken for the event. There are even prizes available for these rides and all details including online entry can be found on the event website www.northernrockcyclone.co.uk

The event is a UCI registered event and is one of only 6 in the UK in 2008.

Entries for the Elite Criterium will be taken up until the day of the event. However it is hoped that Sponsored riders will want to promote their sponsors in advance of the night by appearing on the start sheet and web site.
