The British Cycling Elite Circuit Series kicks off this coming Saturday, May 17, with the Hillingdon GP, incorporating the Edgware RC Ian Dyas Memorial Race, at Hillingdon Circuit, West London.

The longest race in the series, the 50 mile event over 54 laps of the purpose built cycle racing circuit, has drawn 74 entries, just short of the record 77 last year despite the clash with the Ras Tour of Ireland which sees Rob Hayles and Malcolm Elliot, the last two winners, missing from the line up.

The race however will see many a top rider take to the start line including New Zealander Warwick Spence (Cyclefit-Serotta Bikes) a past winner of the National Circuit Race Series who knows the circuit well having won both on the road circuit and in cyclo cross races there.

Likely favourite, however, will be Tony Gibb (Plowman Craven) who effectively started his racing career on this circuit and still regularly rides in the Tuesday evening series when not on duty at top level professional races at home or abroad. Gibb for example won the Tuesday evening event on 6 May with a lone break. The Plowman Craven team will have a few more cards to deal from the pack as well with another former winner of the Circuit Race series, Simon Gaywood listed on the start sheet and the Bedfordshire rider appears to be in good form. Both Gibb and Gaywood will be receiving support from team mates James Millard and James Jackson.

But they will have to look out for the eight man Rapha/Condor/Recycling team, traveling mainly from the north, led by the brothers Adam and Ryan Bonser, while there are six riders from the strong AW Cycles team who provide regular winners at Hillingdon, including up and coming junior Chris Legg, a member of the British Cycling Talent Team, and no doubt eager to show his elders up and perhaps grab some of the £2250 prize list.

20070609_Hillingdon_GP_Report_22

Last year it was a big bunch gallop after 50 miles of racing won by Rob Hayles

In such an open race, there are many more names ont he start sheet capable of getting across the line first. How about multi Winter Series winner Lewis Atkins who appears to be coming back to form or the riders in the Arctic-Premier Racing team who have been contesting the Premier Calendar events. As well as young Legg, there are a number of other top British talents in the race and these include Daniel McLay, Peter Dibben, Jon Mozley  and Simon Holt to name but a few.

The race is being promoted by the long established Edgware RC with several of their past professionals and champions on duty to put back into the sport and remember the late Ian Dyas, who passed away last year. This is with the support of the British Cycling West Thames Promotions organisation which is behind much of the race programme at Hillingdon.

World Champion on Start Sheet
On the day, there will also be support races for all categories of youth and an event for 3/4/Women riders for which entries on the day are welcome. Number 20 for the 3/4/Women's race is World Womens Team Pursuit Champion Jo Rowsell who will be out to keep the men honest with her agressive racing style.

Newcomers since last year will find a great improvement in the facilities with state of the art changing rooms, showers and toilets available in the adjacent Goals Soccer Centre as part of that organisations lease with Hillingdon Council.

See www.highlingdoncyclecircuit.org.uk for information in general on this circuit which is often in use seven days a week for a variety of non-motorised sports in addition to cycling.

Notes for Riders & Officials

Programme
13.00:  Youth u8-u16  EOL £5
13.45:  3/4/Women 1 hour,  Regional C+  EOL £16
15.00:  Hillingdon GP,  E/1/2,  80km (54 laps), National A

Racing will be in a clockwise direction with the finish in the long straight parallel with the nearby A312 The Parkway.

Misc Notes:
There will be photofinish.  One number should be pinned in middle of lower back and the second number on the RIGHT side, between back and chest, so that the number is near horizontal when in racing position. It should NOT be high on the shoulder.
Please note the first three riders are required immediately after the finish for a podium presentation.

Directions
If coming on the M4 from the west, turn off at Junction 3, left to A312, across large roundabout, to fork left just before underpass.  Turn right at roundabout on top on A4020 towards Southall and Ealing.  Immediately take right hand filter lane to turn right into Spirngfield Road at traffic lights.

If coming on the M40, continue as it becomes A40 and fork left at the end of RAF Northolt aerodrome on left. Turn right at roundabout on top on A4180 direction of Yeading and Hayes. At large roundabout take third exit on A312 direction of Hayes (care speed camera) across one roundabout to fork left just before underpass up to roundabout on A4020. Turn left and then take filter lane on right to turn right into Springfield Road at traffic lights.

Car Parking
Car parking is available in front of the Goals Soccer Centre adjacent to the circuit, BUT THERE IS A HEIGHT RESTRICTION. Extra parking is available in the adjacent Minet Park car park, which also has a HEIGHT RESTRICTION. Otherwise there is parking in Springfield Road.

Changing Rooms

20071215_Winter_Series_Report_01
Changing rooms, showers and toilets are available in the Goals building, but no cycling shoes (with plates) or bikes are allowed inside. Do not lean bikes against the painted wall of the building and it is suggested that they be locked while the owner is inside. Although we have had no problems with stolen bikes, we can accept no responsibility and cars have been broken into, as at sports clubs all over the country.

Although cycling has a right to use the Goals Centre facilities within the terms of their lease, we have not had the need to demand anything as they have been very friendly and we have built up an excellent relationship. So please help us keep it that way.

Prizes
The prize list for Hillingdon GP will be £2000 at the finish plus at least £250 in primes donated by the Edgware RC.

Licences
Race licences will be needed at signing on and special sets of numbers will be used. (This is NOT part of the normal Tuesday series.)

Neutral service
This will be provided just beyond the start/finish line by Colin and Nick Mann of the Bath Road Club and teams can service at the same point.  Riders with a technical problem must report to a commissaire and will be allowed one lap out except for the final five laps.  If a rider has a technical problem on the half lap after the finish line, he will be allowed to cross by foot the short distance back to the pits.  When returning to the race, it must be under the direction of the commissaire to the position held in the race prior to the technical problem.

Primes
There will be primes signified by a whistle the preceding lap and a white flag for the actual prime.  We thank the Edgware RC for the donation of the primes in memory of their late member Ian Dyas and for staffing this National Series event which replaces the open meeting originally planned by the Edgware club.

Food
There will be light catering available at the circuit continuously from the morning session of Slipstreamers children's club.  More substantial food may be obtained from the cafe in the Sainsbury store, on the opposite side of the A312, as well as a Beefeater restaurant.  There are also several fast food outlets nearby. Finally, too celebrate your win or drown your sorrows, there is a licensed bar in the Goals centre, but no food other than confectionery from machines.

Most importantly, stay upright!!
